2026-2027 Reed School Calendar

Dear Reed Families,

Welcome to what educators call the 100 Days of May! The amount of learning and excitement planned for these last few weeks of the school year is impressive.

We had the opportunity to kick the month off with Reed’s Open House. Thank you for joining us for a celebration of a remarkable year of learning and growth. Students and families alike were engaged with classroom games, accomplishment scavenger hunts, and wandering through our gallery of artwork. Thank you to our 2nd grade students and Ms. Balfe for the perfect opening act to the evening with a heartfelt choir performance!

A few of the recent learning opportunities this month began with the 2nd Grade’s Safety Walk sponsored by Safe Routes to School. All of our 2nd grade classes participated in a docent-led tour to practice pedestrian safety. Our 1st graders had the chance to participate in a VERY special behind the scenes tour of Troya Restaurant, where they learned about where our food comes from, how a restaurant operates, and worked as mini-chefs to whip up their own batch of Tzatziki! A HUGE thank you to the Kinalilar family for such a generous experience! Today is also Kindergarten Safety Day, where our Raccoons get special visits from local first responders to talk about safe choices. Littlest but not least, we know the end of the year is looming when our PreKers begin their “ABC countdown;” we are already on E for exercise today! Z for “Zoom on Out” is just around the corner!

Finally, THANK YOU for an incredible Educator Appreciation week! We truly appreciate working with such a collaborative and supportive community. Your kindness, gratitude and generosity was warmly received by your Reed School Staff. Thank you for being a part of this special Reed Family.

Warmly,

Aubrey O’Connor & Staff

Math Curriculum Home-to-School Connections:

With summer right around the corner, it’s a great time to reinforce, or even introduce, new math concepts to help avoid the “summer slide.” The good news is that math is everywhere, and there are so many fun, natural ways to keep skills sharp over the break. Here are a few ideas to try at home:

1. Bring math into the kitchen

Cooking is full of math! Following a recipe involves sequencing and counting, while baking requires precise measuring. Try starting with something simple, like a smoothie. Once your child is comfortable, ask them to double the recipe—this builds proportional thinking and introduces multiplication in a meaningful way.

2. Go shopping

Turn everyday errands into math opportunities. Ask your child to find discounts, compare prices, or calculate the total cost of multiple items. If you have coupons, have them figure out the savings. A trip to the farmers market is also a fun option—give your child a set amount of cash and let them decide what they can buy.

3. Listen to music

Music and math go hand in hand. Songs are built on patterns, rhythm, and structure. Look for free summer concerts in your community, explore local music programs, or simply listen together at home. Clap to the beat, notice repeated patterns, and don’t forget to get up and dance!

4. Watch sports and do the math

Sports are a great way to bring math to life. Encourage your child to track stats for their favorite team or player. How much time passes between goals in a soccer game? How do players compare in touchdowns or yardage? Even shooting hoops at the park can become a math activity by measuring and comparing to an official court.

5. Start a business

Summer is the perfect time for kids to try earning some extra money. Whether it’s babysitting, yard work, or dog walking, starting a small business helps build real-world math skills like budgeting, tracking expenses, and calculating profits.

For our families that would like concrete worksheets and games to use over the summer, this link and this link have some great (free) resources to print out or use digitally.

Field Day Signups - Two Opportunities

Field Day is next month! Sign up here for a volunteer spot. For campus safety and security, only registered volunteers will be allowed on campus during the time of their volunteer slot.

One field day volunteer per household , please, to ensure as many kids as possible can see their people. Duplicates will be removed. Volunteers must be there for the entirety of their shift.

There are two volunteer shifts: 8:25am-10:10am and 10:00am-11:25am. To sign up for a station that your child’s class will rotate through during your shift, check out the station rotation schedule here.

The second grade farewell will begin immediately after field day, so second grade parents are encouraged (but not required!) to volunteer in the second shift.

Sign up here to ‘get dunked’ with our new dunk tank! When kids hit a throwing target, a bucket of water pours on the volunteer’s (your) head. Please sign up only for your child’s class. Volunteers may sign up for one game slot AND one dunk slot.
