Principal's Message

Families,

Hope you all had a wonderful Spring Break! It was great to welcome our students back on campus this week as we begin the final stretch of the school year. Please keep an eye out for upcoming communications regarding end-of-year events and elective sign-ups for our rising 7th and 8th graders.

As part of our video "spotlight" series, I recently sat down with Jason Shern, our 6th-grade PE teacher and department lead, to discuss the Track & Field unit. You can view that video HERE. Additionally, please see below for important details regarding our track meet, including specific expectations for student attendance at school that day.

Warmly,

Chad Stuart
Principal

April 24th Track Meet

The Area Track Meet will be held at Tamalpais High School on Friday, April 24th. For the past month, all Del Mar students have been working hard on their Track & Field unit in PE, and those who qualify in their respective categories will represent our school at the meet.

Because only a specific number of students qualify to compete, we will have a regular day of instruction on campus for all other students. Please note that this is a standard school day, not a day off. Our teachers are looking forward to this time, as smaller group sizes allow for more individualized academic attention and growth. We appreciate your support in ensuring your student is at school and ready to learn.

8th Grade Field Trip to Chabot

Our 8th graders took a trip prior to Spring Break to the Chabot Space & Science Center. It was a terrific experiential learning opportunity for our students. Thank you to our 8th grade team of teachers for facilitating this trip.

California Math Festival

Calling all parents!

We would love your help as a volunteer when we hold Del Mar's very first CALIFORNIA MATH FESTIVAL on Monday, June 1st, 2026, from 8am-1:45pm.

The Math Festival is a fun program that will help students learn and enjoy mathematics, and it will be the same kind of experience for you! You DO NOT need to be a math expert to volunteer at the Math Festival. You will learn EVERYTHING you need to know BEFORE the first students arrive. The Math Festival leader will give you an overview of the Festival and information about the activity where you will be assisting students. You will not be acting as teachers, but will give students simple assistance, helping them read and understand the directions at one Festival Station activity.

Be on the lookout for an email coming soon to sign up and become a volunteer for the fun event!

Parent Education Coming Up~Screens, Phones, AI-OH MY!

Screens, phones, AI—oh my! Join Dr. Allison Briscoe-Smith as she tackles the questions that keep so many of us up at night: How much screen time is too much? What's really happening with social media and our kids' mental health? And what do we even do about AI? She'll walk through the current (and yes, controversial) science, create space for your real questions and concerns, and help you develop a practical plan for managing these issues with your own kids—because let's be honest, we're all trying to figure this out as we go. Please send along your questions, thoughts and resources via this link or email our Director of Student Services, Mr. Brian Lynch - blynch@reedschools.org.

Staff Spotlight ~ Mrs. O'Brien

By Leadership Students: Shir-Linh, Tala, and Christopher

This week’s staff spotlight is Ms. O’Brien, one of our special education teachers. She was born in Washington, DC, and has one older and one younger sister. Growing up, she looked up to her aunt, who was kind, organized, and compassionate, and helped shape her values, beliefs, and traits. Ms. O’Brien played many sports growing up, but some that stuck with her throughout high school were ice hockey, and crew, also known as rowing, which taught her teamwork and perseverance.

From a young age, she took a strong interest in the humanities, English being her favorite subject. She became inspired to start her education career through her mom and sister, who both were teachers, and who encouraged her to pursue that same path where she could make a difference. Later in her life, she went to Eckerd College in Florida. After her studies, she became a lifeguard as her first job, where she developed responsibility and leadership skills. Her love for Del Mar and education began as she was getting classroom keys with her husband, Mr. O’Brien. She also knew Mrs. Lynam, which made it an easier transition into Del Mar, where she specialized in education. Mrs. O’Brien has been teaching modified classes for 6 years, and hopes to continue supporting students for many more. Some things that she loves about our school include the beautiful campus, especially the garden, and the community.

Mrs. O’Brien values inclusion and acceptance, and makes it her priority to support her students both academically and emotionally. She ensures that she respects her students' values to make them feel seen and heard, and is always a motivational figure in and out of her classroom. Some advice for her students is to acknowledge the fact that middle school impacts your future; it is the training ground for the rest of your educational career, and the habits that you build now will stick and help shape your future.

Outside of her job, Mrs. O’Brien loves to be around nature by hiking and fishing, finding peace in the outdoors. She enjoys being active through roller skating and running, adding to her love for being out in nature. Turning back to her passion for the subject of English, Mrs. O’Brien likes to read narratives about real life experiences, as they offer meaningful insights, new perspectives, and unique stories. For music, Mrs. O'Brien likes a range of genres, including hip-hop, classic rock, alternative rock, and rap. Mrs. O'Brien is currently married to our 8th grade science teacher, Mr. O’Brien, and is about to give birth to their first daughter! Mrs. O’Brien also owns a dog named Boondoggle, who is 14 years old and has been a longtime companion to her.

To conclude, Mrs. O’Brien is a passionate teacher who cares about her student’s beliefs and well-being, as well as their academic journey. Mrs. O’Brien constantly contributes to the community of our school, making it a more inclusive and welcoming place. If you see her around campus or have her as a teacher, make sure you show your appreciation by thanking her for her positive impact on our school!

Bell Schedule

Our 2025-26 regular bell schedule can be found HERE.

Attendance Instructions/Leaving Early/Arriving Late

Please call the office on the day of your child's absence by 8:00 a.m. (435-1468, ext. 1) or email delmar@reedschools.org. This will eliminate the need for a call from the office. We expect students to attend school, unless there is an excused absence-for illness, injury, a medical/dental appointment or a religious holiday. All other absences are marked "unexcused." Absence does not excuse a student from the classroom assignment. All assignments are available on the teacher websites. It is the student's responsibility to check the websites and make up for missed work once they are healthy.

Leaving School Early? Arriving Late? We want to avoid calling into any classroom!

Students arriving late to school must sign in with the office and get a tardy slip before going to class.

If you need to pick your child up for any reason, please try to do so between classes, and be sure to remind your child to come to the office to meet you there, without needing a call from the office. If your child must leave in the middle of any class, please send your child with a note to give to the teacher so they can excuse themselves in the middle of class. We do not ever want to call into a classroom unless there is an emergency, so please plan accordingly! Any student leaving before the end of the day must be signed out by their parent or an authorized adult.
