Dear Reed Families, This week is a short but busy one for your Raccoons and filled with special guests.
Author Visit Did your child come home raving about their special assembly at Reed yesterday? All of our students were lucky to spend part of their morning with Shawn Harris, Caldecott Honor illustrator and children's author.
Students enjoyed doing art inspired by some of Shawn's books in the library last week and loved hearing him share his experiences while making children's books.
This visit was made possible by our PTA-led Literati Book Fair last spring, thanks to the rewards earned from our school community's shopping!
This year's Reed Literati Online Store
is open year-round, where you can find many of Shawn Harris' books, including the First Cat in Space series and Let's Be Bees highlighted today.
Mr. Dave Nettell Today your Prek students will come home sharing stories of teamwork and cooperation. Our Prek classes were lucky enough to work with Dave Nettell from Cooperative Adventures
, who presents classrooms of kiddos with a series of increasingly complex and difficult challenges. Success at these developmentally appropriate tasks can only be achieved through cooperation, so that group and individual self-esteem is enhanced through the development of trust, risk-taking, and communication. Our Raccoons were up for the challenge!
Your Input matters!
We are running short on time for families to complete the Youth Truth survey to share perspectives and experiences as a member of the Reed School community. Please take the survey before it closes by clicking this link: ytsurvey.org/rusdfamily26
We sincerely thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. Your response is incredibly valuable to the entire Reed School Team.
Reed School PreK & Kindergarten Registration: January 21-23 PreK/Kindergarten online registration opened
today for incoming students new to Reed School. If you have an incoming, age-eligible PreK or Kindergarten child, please register as soon as possible. Early registration is important so we can plan and secure staff and classrooms. Please also pass this along to any friends and neighbors in the district. *Current PreK & Kindergarten students do not need to re-register. All current Reed students will remain automatically enrolled.
If you will be moving out of the area and/or your student will NOT be returning to Reed School in the fall, please email reed@reedschools.org
. This information is critical as we plan for staffing, so thank you for letting us know as soon as possible.
Warmly, Aubrey O'Connor & Staff |

RUSD Food Service Program-Revolution Foods:
The Reed Union School District is partnering with a new lunch vendor since our return to school in January. We are grateful to Revolution Foods for helping us quickly pivot when our previous vendor had to step away from public school contracts. In next week’s Headline News we will share information with families regarding an upcoming Food Service survey and opportunity to join our Food Service Task Force as we work together to find long-term solutions. Thank you for your interest and support.
A Note from our School Nurse: As usual, respiratory and gastrointestinal viruses are spreading widely this time of year. The "new" flu strain for the 2025-2026 season is a highly evolved variant of Influenza A known as H3N2 subclade K,
which emerged after vaccine composition was set, leading to a potentially less effective vaccine, but the vaccine still offers protection against severe illness.
Please remember a few tips to help keep your family and our schools healthy: - Keep your student home if they are feeling sick. Students must be without fever, vomiting and diarrhea for over 24 hours without medication before returning to school. They should also feel well enough to participate in all school activities.
- Keep your family up to date on flu, COVID-19 and RSV vaccines (it’s not too late!), as well as childhood routine vaccines. If you or your child gets sick, check in with your medical provider in case they recommend testing and treatment.
- Make sure your children get plenty of sleep each night (9-12 hours) and eat a healthy, well-balanced diet.
- Read Dr. Matt Willis' newsletter
for helpful updates about infectious disease activity and other public health news
Thank you for partnering with us to keep everyone healthy! -- Nurse Mankin |
A January tradition we’re proud of
Every January, the Foundation for Reed Schools delivers the first half of its $2 million annual commitment to the district with a $1 million distribution
, supporting the specialist programs and people our students rely on all year long.
This week, President Michelle Wilson and Executive Director Mickey Hubbell presented the check to the school board.
Thank you to our families, community donors, and sponsors for making this commitment possible, year after year. |

RUSD PTA is seeking engaged PTA members to serve on the 2026 Nominating Committee for the PTA Executive Board. The committee will consist of five members and one alternate. Familiarity with all three school sites and their volunteer communities is preferred, but not required.
This is a short yet meaningful commitment, with meetings held in February and March, and the goal of presenting a final slate of candidates by late March. Serving on the Nominating Committee is a great way to support strong leadership and ensure continued success for our PTA.
👉 If you’re interested in participating or would like more information, please reach out to RUSD Parliamentarian Tracey Paull (traceypaull@gmail.com) by January 30th.
PTA members interested in serving on the committee will be voted on by the PTA membership through a confidential online survey. To be eligible for consideration—or to cast a vote—members must be in good standing and current with their PTA dues. (It’s not too late, you can pay your PTA dues HERE). | Reporting a Reed School Absence
