Principal's Message

Families,

We had two fun events on campus last week. First, our entire 6th grade class participated in The Ziggurat Challenge. In groups, the objective was to build a ziggurat in the allotted time using the supplies provided - the categories were: most historically accurate, highest, most creative and best teamwork. In addition, our leadership program presented our first pep rally of the school year, which included our grade level awards for the “Dragons of the Trimester.” Pictures of both events are below.

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to our entire school community. This year thus far has been filled with growth, learning, and wonderful achievements, and it wouldn't be possible without your support, partnership, and dedication. Your encouragement at home and your involvement in our school make a world of difference for our students and staff. I hope this Thanksgiving break provides an opportunity to rest, reflect, and create cherished memories with loved ones.

Wishing you a safe, joyful, and restful holiday. We look forward to continuing this incredible journey together when we return!

Sincerely,

Chad Stuart (he/him)
Principal

End of T1 / Start of T2

The end of Trimester 1 was last Friday, November 14th. Teachers will be finalizing report cards through this week. We will then be out of school for Thanksgiving recess November 24th through November 28th. Report cards will be emailed out during the week of December 1st. Please note that report cards will not include any semester elective classes for 7th/8th grade students in those classes - those class report cards will be sent after January 16th, which is the last day of the semester.

The beginning of Trimester 2 started on Monday, November 17th. All 6th grade elective wheel classes rotated to the new class as of that date.

Fun Run Turkey Trot ~ This Friday

We are excited for our annual Fun Run / Turkey Trot, happening this Friday! All of our students have been preparing for this event in their Physical Education classes, and we encourage everyone to participate. While some students will be trying to win the race or set a personal record, others are welcome to jog and use the opportunity to run with their friends. Our main goal is to promote exercise and healthy habits as we head into the holiday season, so simply participating in the run is a huge success for every student. As a reward for their participation, all students will receive a delicious popsicle, provided by our PTA.

Please note: This is a student-only event and is not open to parents or guardians for viewing. Thank you to our physical education teachers, Mr. Shern, Mr. Silva and Ms. Johnson, for organizing this great event!

Staff Spotlight

Staff Spotlight: Ms. McKay

By Leadership Students: Tala S., Aiden F. and Cecilia S.

This week's staff spotlight is none other than our brand new 6th grade humanities teacher, Ms. McKay! Growing up in Marin, Ms. McKay lived with a younger sister and brother, as well as a horse. Ms. McKay always had the urge to teach, and was inspired by powerful women, like Jane Goodall. For Ms. McKay’s college education, she attended UC Santa Cruz where she majored in History, go slugs!! After college, Ms. McKay sold cookies, and was hired for teaching jobs at other schools.

This year is Ms. McKay’s first year at Del Mar, but she was a teacher for many years at Bel Air. Overall she has spent 24 years at the Reed Union School District, and was introduced to Del Mar through teachers at Bel Aire. Right now, she teaches humanities and art, two subjects where she can express her thoughts clearly. As Ms. McKay teaches 6th graders, a piece of advice she gives is to be organized with all your materials to help students be able to efficiently and effectively complete work. In terms of teaching style, Ms. McKay feels that she is strict when needed, but allows students to enjoy the learning process. One thing she has learned from teaching over the years, is the value of making relationships with others. She explains that you can learn a lot from the people you meet, and create opportunities for yourself that will benefit you in the long run. Ms McKay states that her number one reward for teaching is watching her students slowly grow up, and become accomplished adults. It brings her joy when she gets to meet her former students, and catch up with them. One thing Ms. McKay would love to see at Del Mar is the addition of a mural and more greenery to bring even more life and color to our beautiful school. She also suggested having more activities for students to participate in during breaks, to cultivate creativity and encourage physical activity.

Ms. McKay enjoys hobbies such as snowboarding, paddle boarding, and hiking. As clearly shown, she loves outdoor activities, especially ones she can enjoy with her family. Some might know that Ms. McKay is an avid ice cream connoisseur, her all time favorite flavor is mocha almond fudge, and she often enjoys it at an ice cream parlor called Silbermanns in San Rafael. If Ms. McKay had to choose a favorite history unit, she would choose the Renaissance, as she is deeply interested in European history. All in all, if you ever see Ms. McKay’s bright smile roaming the halls, or in her classroom, don’t hesitate to show your appreciation!

Attendance Instructions/Leaving Early/Arriving Late

Please call the office on the day of your child's absence by 8:00 a.m. (435-1468, ext. 1) or email delmar@reedschools.org. This will eliminate the need for a call from the office. We expect students to attend school, unless there is an excused absence-for illness, injury, a medical/dental appointment or a religious holiday. All other absences are marked "unexcused." Absence does not excuse a student from the classroom assignment. All assignments are available on the teacher websites. It is the student's responsibility to check the websites and make up for missed work once they are healthy.

Leaving School Early? Arriving Late? We want to avoid calling into any classroom!

Students arriving late to school must sign in with the office and get a tardy slip before going to class.

If you need to pick your child up for any reason, please try to do so between classes, and be sure to remind your child to come to the office to meet you there, without needing a call from the office. If your child must leave in the middle of any class, please send your child with a note to give to the teacher so they can excuse themselves in the middle of class. We do not ever want to call into a classroom unless there is an emergency, so please plan accordingly! Any student leaving before the end of the day must be signed out by their parent or an authorized adult.
