Principal's Message

Families,

Our annual Halloween celebration was a tremendous success, radiating creativity and positive community spirit across the campus! It was a joy to see the wonderful costumes and have our students and staff participate together in the festive, safe activities. We are grateful to our staff for their tremendous enthusiasm, and especially proud of our students for demonstrating such mutual respect and kindness. Thank you also to the PTA for providing a Halloween lunch for our staff.

We've noticed a recent uptick in student absences, and I want to take a moment to emphasize just how crucial consistent attendance is for your child's middle school success. Missing school, even for a day or two, can create significant gaps in learning that are tough to make up. Every day is filled with valuable instruction, discussion, and activities that build upon the previous one. Being present ensures your student stays on track academically, understands key concepts, and benefits from the social interaction and routine that are vital for their development. Please help us by prioritizing regular school attendance. If your child must be absent, please notify the office, and we'll work with you to ensure they can catch up as smoothly as possible.

Sincerely,

Chad Stuart (he/him)
Principal

End of T1 / Start of T2

The end of Trimester 1 is Friday, November 14th. Teachers will be finalizing report cards the week after the trimester ends. We will then be out of school for Thanksgiving recess November 24th through November 28th. Report cards will be emailed out during the week of December 1st.

The beginning of Trimester 2 starts on Monday, November 17th. All 6th grade elective wheel classes will rotate on that date. All 7th/8th grade semester electives will not rotate until January 20th.

VAPA at Del Mar

What is VAPA? This year RUSD has created a new position called the Visual and Performing Arts Teacher on Special Assignment, or VAPA TOSA. Abby O’Leary, a former Bel Aire and Del Mar teacher, has taken on this role.

Ms. O’Leary has been working with teachers to integrate art activities into their academic and advisory classrooms. She partnered with Ms. Chase to help prepare all 7th grade students for oral presentations in their English classes. She has worked with both speech and debate electives, strategies classes, and the leadership classes. She also helped to arrange a visiting artist to the filmmaking elective and a visiting storyteller who performed for the entire 6th grade during their fairy tale summative writing project.

Parents are invited to join the work of Ms. O’Leary on the district VAPA Task Force. This group will determine the direction of our arts programming over the next several years. There will be three meetings during the school year, and the first meeting is on Wednesday November 12, 3:30-5:00. Please click the link above to join in this important and exciting work.

Staff Spotlight

Staff Spotlight: Ms. Hailer

By Leadership Students: Tala S., Aiden F. and Cecilia S.

This week’s staff spotlight for Del Mar is our new 8th grade math teacher, Ms. Hailer! As a child, Ms. Hailer cultivated a passion for teaching, which as you know, she later pursued. Growing up her idol was Madonna, and she was inspired by powerful political women. She always had a positive attitude throughout her life, thus her kind personality. During Ms. Hailer’s college education she attended Santa Rosa Junior College and majored in economics. When Ms. Hailer turned 19 years old, she enrolled in the military, where she learned how to work missiles.

To start off Ms. Hailer’s professional career, she worked as an analyst at her company. She then moved on to teaching at a high school, and after 15 years of teaching high schoolers she wanted a change. Ms. Hailer applied for a job at Del Mar after seeing there was a shortage in math teachers. A challenge she sees here at Del Mar is the complicated schedule, and what she loves is the tight knit community. Outside of school Ms. Hailer enjoys baking, sewing, and hiking. Ms. Hailer's positive personality is matched with the love of dogs whether she has one or not. Ms. Hailer is excited to continue to embark on her journey here at Del Mar, so if you ever see Ms. Hailer, don't hesitate to say hi!

Attendance Instructions/Leaving Early/Arriving Late

Please call the office on the day of your child's absence by 8:00 a.m. (435-1468, ext. 1) or email delmar@reedschools.org. This will eliminate the need for a call from the office. We expect students to attend school, unless there is an excused absence-for illness, injury, a medical/dental appointment or a religious holiday. All other absences are marked "unexcused." Absence does not excuse a student from the classroom assignment. All assignments are available on the teacher websites. It is the student's responsibility to check the websites and make up for missed work once they are healthy.

Leaving School Early? Arriving Late? We want to avoid calling into any classroom!

Students arriving late to school must sign in with the office and get a tardy slip before going to class.

If you need to pick your child up for any reason, please try to do so between classes, and be sure to remind your child to come to the office to meet you there, without needing a call from the office. If your child must leave in the middle of any class, please send your child with a note to give to the teacher so they can excuse themselves in the middle of class. We do not ever want to call into a classroom unless there is an emergency, so please plan accordingly! Any student leaving before the end of the day must be signed out by their parent or an authorized adult.
