Principal's Message

Families,

We are pleased with the success of our new school lunch program this year. The initial feedback from our students has been overwhelmingly positive, with many noting the improved taste and quality of the food. This success would not be possible without the dedication of our parent volunteers. We extend our sincere gratitude to those who generously have given their time to help serve our students each day. Your service is invaluable, and your commitment directly contributes to the positive environment of our lunch program.

On another note, in the interest of maintaining a safe and efficient campus for all students, we ask that you please review our student drop-off and pick-up safety protocol detailed below. Please also take a moment to examine the accompanying diagrams (included below in this NewsFlash) for a clear visualization of the procedure if you drive your student to and/or from school. Your adherence to these guidelines is crucial for the safety of our entire community. Also, please review our instructions for picking up students early, which should only happen for important reasons, for example, a medical appointment. These instructions are included at the bottom of every newsflash, with the goal being to minimize any classroom disruption.

Sincerely,

Chad Stuart
Principal

Picture Make-Up Day (11/6) and Ordering Instructions

Hopefully you saw your child's ID card with the photo, and ordered school photos directly with Dorian Photography.

If your child was absent on picture day, or really wants a re-take, they will be able to go to the PE classroom at lunchtime or Advisory on Wednesday, November 6th for a re-take. You may order photos using the QR code below, or by visiting mydorian.com.

We are excited for Halloween next week. Middle school aged students have so much fun and enthusiasm that day - it is so great to see. Students from our Leadership Class organize a costume competition, and we have an extended lunch special bell schedule where all students are welcome to cheer on their classmates (no parents unfortunately).

Students have been notified in the Student Bulletin about our Halloween costume contest and have been advised that:

  • Costumes may be worn all day, whether or not they are in the contest.
  • All costumes need to follow the school dress code and be appropriate for school.
  • No lookalike weapons or full face masks are allowed.
  • "My culture is not your costume.” Please do not portray a stereotyped image of a culture or group of people.
  • Even if students don’t participate in the lunchtime contest, they can still show their spirit on Halloween by dressing in costume all day long!

Safe Halloween - Tips for Parents

Halloween is a great time to connect with your children and spend quality time together. As they mature and grow older, they will want to flex their newfound independence and socialize with friends. HERE are some helpful tips and guidelines (from the MCOE) for a safe and fun Halloween that everyone can feel good about. We recommend parents click the link and read it in full.

Staff Spotlight

Staff Spotlight: Mr. Snyder

By Leadership Students: Tala S., Aiden F. and Cecilia S.

This week's staff spotlight is the da Vinci of Del Mar, Mr. Snyder! Mr. Snyder grew up in the state of Ohio, with two grandmothers that were painters, a father that was an engineer, and a mother that was a writer. As a child, Mr. Snyder was invested in the sports realm and the artistic one. Specifically, Mr. Snyder played football, but quit post injury. Throughout his life he has always admired his father and mother, but also took inspiration from many of his important teachers. During Mr. Snyder's college career, he attended Case Western Reserve University and majored in the arts, specializing in printmaking. His college advisory teacher encouraged him to pursue the arts, and later on become a teacher!

Mr. Snyder found out about Del Mar through a friend who previously attended the school. Mr. Snyder has worked at Del Mar for 26 years, and enjoys all aspects of Del Mar, especially how supportive the school is about art. Though one thing he would improve, is to have more sport options and to promote athletics in general. A lesson that Mr. Snyder has learned here at Del Mar is that you need to have patience and empathy for students. In addition, the hardest part about the job, he says, is discipline. A piece of advice for students to be successful in his class is to bring out your best self and attitude. In art he appreciates how you can find your own voice and display it in your own creation. He states that art has led him to make many important decisions and choices throughout his life. Some hobbies outside of school that Mr. Snyder takes part in are: coaching his children’s sports teams, collecting shoes, and music. If you didn’t know, Mr. Snyder has a grand total of 250 pairs of shoes! All in all, if you're interested in art or if you are looking for something new, don’t hesitate to enroll in Mr. Snyder’s art class!

Pick-up / Drop Off Safety Protocol

We have received information from parents and community members that some possible unsafe drop off and pickup of students has been occurring. With that, here are some reminders for dropping off and picking up your student.

Safe School Drop-Off & Pick-Up: Picking up on Avenida Miraflores in front of school Double parking in the bike lane is unsafe for kids and neighbors, makes it hard for the buses to leave campus and is a traffic violation. DON’T DO THIS:

Options to Parking Illegally on Avenida Miraflores:

  • Bike, walk, take bus
  • Pick up on Hilary Drive or further up on Avenida Miraflores
  • Pick up across the street Pick up 5 min after school ends ~~ less traffic!

Drop-off / Pick-up on Hilary Drive behind School:

PLEASE follow the map below and ONLY drop or pick up your student on the school side of the street. This helps with the safety of students crossing the street and also with traffic flow:  Left Hilary Dr., Right on Rowley Circle, Continue around Left on Howard Drive, Left On Hilary Drive,  Drop or pick up child on Hilary Drive, passenger door side.

Attendance Instructions/Leaving Early/Arriving Late

Please call the office on the day of your child's absence by 8:00 a.m. (435-1468, ext. 1) or email delmar@reedschools.org. This will eliminate the need for a call from the office. We expect students to attend school, unless there is an excused absence-for illness, injury, a medical/dental appointment or a religious holiday. All other absences are marked "unexcused." Absence does not excuse a student from the classroom assignment. All assignments are available on the teacher websites. It is the student's responsibility to check the websites and make up for missed work once they are healthy.

Leaving School Early? Arriving Late? We want to avoid calling into any classroom!

Students arriving late to school must sign in with the office and get a tardy slip before going to class.

If you need to pick your child up for any reason, please try to do so between classes, and be sure to remind your child to come to the office to meet you there, without needing a call from the office. If your child must leave in the middle of any class, please send your child with a note to give to the teacher so they can excuse themselves in the middle of class. We do not ever want to call into a classroom unless there is an emergency, so please plan accordingly! Any student leaving before the end of the day must be signed out by their parent or an authorized adult.
