2025-2026 Reed School Calendar

Dearest Reed Families,

The first day of autumn slingshot us back to summer vibes this week and your students have been working hard to play it “cool.” Thank you for slapping on the sunscreen, dressing your kiddos in layers and sending them with full water bottles. Our team is encouraging water and shade breaks throughout the busy learning day. This is a perfect time to remind you to label EVERYTHING as our playground tends to resemble backstage at a runway show on these warm afternoons.

Town-FANTASTIC!
I’d like to extend a huge town-tacular thank you to the Towtastic leads, Erica Wehrs and Sarah Reid, the whole PTA Towntastic committee and the many PTA volunteers that hosted our annual Towntastic event last week! From grade level themed buildings, neighborhoods and monuments (thank you caregivers for your help at home!), to colossal Racoon cakes and Del Mar student-leader supported lawn games, this year’s celebration set the tone for an inclusive, community centered school year. Thank you to our middle schoolers and Raccoon families for their participation!

We Belong at Reed School
Last week, our Kindergarten-2nd grade Raccoons participated in Belonging Assemblies with Mr. Sam Drazin. He shared his own life story and connected it to the theme of creating a sense of belonging and inclusion for all students at school and beyond. He talked about the importance of asking questions to learn about who people are on the inside, instead of relying solely on what we can see on the outside. Mr. Drazin will continue working with the staff at Reed School as we work on our internal RUSD Inclusion and Wellness goals, and will push into all grade level classrooms in the upcoming months.

New Family Guides for English Language Arts and Math
We're excited to announce the release of our new Family Guides for English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. These guides were created in direct response to your valuable feedback from the YouthTruth survey, where many of you requested more communication about your child’s academic development and progress. We see these guides as a crucial first step toward strengthening our partnership with you.

These guides are designed to help you support your student's learning at home. Each guide outlines the core concepts students will engage with throughout the school year. They also provide helpful questions you can ask your student and suggest ways to challenge their thinking. We encourage you to use these guides as a tool to engage with your student's learning and to foster rich conversations about what they are exploring in class. You can find the Family Guides here:

  • PreK ELA
  • PreK Math
  • Kindergarten ELA
  • Kindergarten Math
  • 1st Grade ELA
  • 1st Grade Math
  • 2nd Grade ELA
  • 2nd Grade Math

Deaf or Hard of Hearing Representation

As you will read about in this week's Headline News, our school will be focusing on hearing loss this month as part of our district's disability scope and sequence.  Your children's library lesson will be focused on it next week. Please feel free to check out this document with resources from our librarian, Mrs. Smith.

Finally, for our families of the Jewish faith celebrating this week, Happy High Holy days! Your Reed School staff and community are sending you warm wishes for the new year!

Warmly,
Aubrey O’Connor

What a night! Thank you to our Towntastic Commitee and our whole community for an incredible event. Co-chairs Erica Wehrs and Sarah Reid put lots of love and dedication into this special night. Del Mar student leaders and parent volunteers sold pizza, did crafts, played games, and created an unforgettable evening for our kiddos. Check out a few pictures below!
