2025-2026 Reed School Calendar

Dear Reed Families and Caregivers,

May is traditionally a very busy month in education, and this year is no exception. It was so lovely to start the month with our Reed School Open House. In classrooms across the campus, it was so joyful to see our Reed Raccoons sharing their learning and accomplishments with friends and family. Please help me give a shout out to our 2nd grade choir led by Ms. Balfe, for launching the evening with a beautiful musical performance. I hope you enjoyed the evening as much as we did! Speaking of musical performances, last week our entire school enjoyed a special performance by the Bel Aire Choir and Band led by Mr. Jent—such talented musicians!

Our May calendar also is filled with an array of engaging field trips. Last week our PreK classes set off for a walking field trip to the Tiburon library and our kindergarten classes enjoyed a full day at the Bay Area Discovery Museum. Next week, our 1st grade is off to the Farmer’s Market and then to the Connolly Ranch in Napa at the end of the month. On Friday, our 2nd grade has a day planned at Bel Aire as well as a visit to the Exploratorium in early June. We are so appreciative to our district for supporting such important and enriching experiences and to our many parent volunteers for making time to chaperone.

Lastly, on behalf of our entire Reed Staff, I thank you for the amazing week of Staff Appreciation. We truly appreciate working with such a thoughtful and supportive community. Your many, many kindnesses and gestures of appreciation were warmly received.

Warmly,
Mary

Bus Passes Go on Sale May 27th at 9 AM

Since 2016, the Yellow Bus Challenge has provided essential school bus service to Reed Union School District (RUSD) students—helping to ease traffic across the Tiburon Peninsula. What began as a small initiative has become a major success, with nearly half of all RUSD students now riding the bus.

As we approach our ten-year anniversary, we’re excited to share several updates for the upcoming school year:

  • Introducing the TPTA. You knew us as the Yellow Bus Challenge. Now we're the Tiburon Peninsula Traffic Alliance (TPTA)—same team, same mission, more programs!
  • New Website! Visit www.tiburontraffic.org to learn more about the TPTA, explore bus routes, and purchase passes. Pass sales begin May 27, 2025, at 9:00 AM. While you can view the routes now, you will not be able to purchase the passes until May 27th.
  • New Contact Information. Please direct all school bus questions to our new email address: info@tiburontraffic.org.
  • Afterschool Route Pilot. We’re launching a limited-stop aftercare bus route for students participating in afterschool programs at the Ranch (Reed and Bel Aire campuses) next school year. This pilot aims to ease late-afternoon traffic and save families the drive during peak congestion hours. Please look for details coming soon.
  • St. Hilary Pilot Service. In partnership with St. Hilary School, we’re also piloting morning and afternoon routes to reduce congestion near Rock Hill Drive during peak traffic hours.
  • Purple AM Bus – New Time. The Purple AM route serving Belvedere and downtown Tiburon will now depart at 7:40 AM—20 minutes later than before—making it easier for Del Mar students to catch the bus.
  • Purple PM Route Split. To shorten the afternoon ride, the Purple PM route is being divided into two: one serving Tiburon, the other serving Belvedere.

We’re looking forward to another great year on board! Questions? Reach out anytime at info@tiburontraffic.org

Specialist Corner: Spanish Note from Maestra Mayes

Kindergartners and 1st graders continue practicing how to greet each other and welcome the day with a song. They are also learning how to say “me gusta” (I like) when talking about fruits, activities, and sports through fun games. Second graders have started learning how to make small sentences such as “yo puedo” (I can) and “yo tengo” (I have) by playing games and reading books related to these concepts.

Second grade clubs are continuing their exploration of Spanish-speaking countries around the world. After learning interesting facts about a featured country, students create beautiful works of art—such as ojos de Dios inspired by the Huichol people of Mexico, llamas from Peru, and mosaic lizards inspired by Antoni Gaudí in Barcelona.

In the Builders Studio, students have been working on hands-on projects that incorporate key Spanish vocabulary. They have designed houses for pets and butterflies and created symmetrical projects. Thank you to the Foundation for Reed Schools for making this learning experience possible!

2025-26 Enrollment
Please email reed@reedschools.org if you will be moving out of the area and/or your PreK, Kindergartener, or 1st grade student will NOT be returning to Reed School in the fall. This information is critical as we plan for staffing, so thank you for letting us know as soon as possible.

June 11: Field Day

Reed Field Day will be Wednesday, June 11th from 8:30-11:00am! This end-of-year tradition is always a student favorite – Mr. Kaiser and the PTA team appreciate your help to make this year’s the best one yet!

To sign up for a volunteer shift, check out the Sign-Up Genius. Sign-ups are limited to one per household, and please only sign up if you can attend for the entirety of the shift. Only registered volunteers will be allowed on campus during their shifts to keep the campus secure and organized.

Second grade parents are encouraged to sign up for the second shift (9:30-11:00am) so they can stay and watch a special 2nd Grade Farewell song right after Field Day!

Eyes Up Marin - Tip of the Month

Most bicycle crashes involving motorists can be avoided by riding visibly and predictably, following the rules of the road. Riding against traffic is dangerous because it dramatically increases the risk of collisions with oncoming vehicles and other cyclists; drivers do not anticipate a cyclist approaching from the wrong direction. Unpredictable behavior on an e-bike can increase the risk of impact at high speeds; the higher the speed, the less time the driver and cyclist have to react. Riding and driving predictably, following the laws, saves lives.

Remember: Eyes Up!

The Eyes Up, Marin campaign is part of the Street Smarts Program and Safe Routes to Schools, locally-funded programs of the Transportation Authority of Marin.

A special PTYay and heartfelt appreciation goes out to Kim Meek, Julia Gellert, and Krupa Antani (Reed) and Shaida Aytay, Caryn Wu, and Shirley Young (Bel Aire) for leading the way and making this year’s Book Drive a tremendous success! A special shout out to Shirley as she served as the liaison with The Book Exchange and personally sorted all of the books!  Thanks to their incredible efforts—and the support of our amazing Reed and Bel Aire communities—over 5,000 books were donated to The Book Exchange in San Rafael!

Because of their time, energy, and dedication to volunteering, countless children in Marin County will have access to the joy of reading and the opportunity to learn and grow. We are so grateful for their generosity and commitment. Their efforts show the incredible impact we can have when we come together to help others.
