| Reed Open House
Thursday, May 1 from 5:30pm - 7:00pm | Dear Reed Families and Caregivers,
Spring is here! With spring comes lots of excitement and an array of PTA and school sponsored activities across Reed School. We are presently in the midst of Sing-a-Story Opera in the Classroom with visiting artists from the San Francisco Opera Guild. Be sure to read below for more information and lots of photos. On Friday, March 14 our entire school enjoyed our annual Read Across Reed
event. Throughout the morning, several important members from our school and broader community read to students in every classroom. Guest readers included members of the Tiburon Police Department, postal carriers of the Belvedere-Tiburon Post Office, members of our RUSD Board, the Mayor of Belvedere, and more! Last Friday, our entire PreK enjoyed hands-on STEAM activities with the Try It Truck engineering-on-wheels. Yesterday, our 1st grade classes enjoyed a visit from several guests from Agricultural Institute of Marin (AIM) and our 2nd grade students began a 6-session poetry exploration with guest teachers from the Pseads organization. Tonight, we hope to see many of our families at our Reed School Book Fair Family Night. This is a great opportunity to connect with friends and families—old and new!
In the midst of the excitement that spring brings, students can sometimes need a little extra support developing and using positive and proactive strategies for communicating with others. We encourage parents and caregivers to carve out time to review, revisit, and look for opportunities to practice the Kimochis 7 Keys to Communication together with your child. Warmly, Mary Niesyn & Staff |
First Graders Learning All About Plants Our entire 1st grade had a visit from Ms. Blossom, Ms. Mint and others from the Agricultural Institute of Marin (AIM)
. Students learned about what plants need, including water, sun, soil, and love! Students also made ‘Grass Buddies’ which will sprout grass hair. Ask your 1st grader all about their experience! |
Poetry in 1st & 2nd Grades
Thanks to the generosity of our District PTA, our 1st and 2nd grade students once again will participate in the Blue Skies, Bright Star Science and Poetry program. Each class will enjoy 4-6 poetry lessons with guest teachers from Pseads.org *The Blue Skies, Bright Star Science and Poetry program is an 8-week experience for students in Grades 1-8
that integrates the humanizing power of poetry and the joy and acuity of science to explore the roots of human curiosity, creativity, storytelling, and innovation. This program is currently in its 10th year, and serving over 2,000 students a year in five districts. Teachers have reported district-wide improvement in writing scores, and in collaboration with educators, this initiative has helped set new benchmarks for
equity, achievement, asset-based learning, art-science integration, and community-building. Sing-a-Story Reed School sends a sincere Thank You
to our PTA for once again sponsoring Sing-a-Story Opera in the Classroom. Sing-a-Story is a component of The San Francisco Opera Guild's educational program in which a teaching artist visits each classroom and leads students in a singing lesson and an interactive musical telling of a classic opera story. The operas were: Hansel and Gretel (PreK & Kindergarten), The Magic Flute (1st grade), and Many Voices of Cinderella
(2nd grade). What a treat it is to see our students in action. Enjoy the photos below! |
Specialist Corner: PE Note from Mr. Kaiser
With March Madness in full swing, we are focused on basketball skills! Kids are receiving instruction in the fundamentals of dribbling, defending without fouling, passing, and shooting. Our goal is to make recess basketball games safe and fun. A few kids are even learning to spin the ball on their finger!
I love a good game collaboration with a grade, a class, or a student. One of our 2nd grade students created a game we now call Max Z Ball. We’ve developed 3 levels to this game. Half the class starts defending a pin standing in a hula hoop. Using the underhand toss, students try to knock down anyone’s pin. They must keep one foot in the hoop when they throw and they can run around anywhere to get a ball. If their pin falls down they are out and go to the back of the line. It has been quite popular with the students and will definitely be an annual event every year!
This week we have the Book Fair so we are outside in the beautiful weather playing Drag’n Tails! Students are learning how to put on and attach a long flag to a belt and run around trying to stomp on each other’s tail. If a tail comes off, that student does 5 jumping jacks, puts their tail back on, and rejoins the game.
*As we roll into spring and the weather gets nice, please consider signing up for our lunchtime activity volunteer opportunity. |

Sign up here to help with setup, as a cashier, or on family night! Reed Book Donation Drive April 21-25 It's time for our annual book donation drive to benefit The Book Exchange of Marin! The Book Exchange connects kids and teens from Marin's most under-resourced communities to books - a terrific community-service organization that needs our support.
Our goal is to donate 5000 books this year, which is an average of 13 books per student. It's a big goal, but not too far from what we have delivered in the past! The Need for Children and Teens: Fiction, story books, chapter books, learning/easy readers, dictionaries, encyclopedias, textbooks and test prep books for teens. Please, no adult books or cookbooks.
The Ask: Drop books in the bins placed in front of the main entry to school and front office during the week of April 21-25. ! Eyes Up Marin Tip of the Month |
Don’t be distracted by the alerts from your phone. Did you know you have the ability to silence your phone while driving? To silence your phone while driving, enable “Do Not Disturb While Driving” or “Driving Focus” on your iOS or Android phone, which automatically silences calls, texts, and notifications when you’re detected to be driving.
Google “silence phone while driving” to find out how. If you have to use your phone, make sure you use hands free equipment. The Eyes Up Marin campaign is part of the Street Smarts Program and Safe Routes to Schools, locally-funded programs of the Transportation Authority of Marin.
