Principal's Message

Families,

Hope you were able to find some time to spend some time connecting with your child while we were off of school last week. I was able to take a short trip to Arizona to watch some Spring Training baseball games with my wife, my son (10th grade) and my daughter (8th grade). I was reminded of how important the conversations and connections I have with my kids are for them and for me. It reminds me also of the importance of my job here at Del Mar, to help guide our students to have a successful future!

February is Black History Month. At Del Mar, many of our teachers took time to recognize this in our classrooms. In addition, on the Thursday before we left for vacation, our students in our Leadership class, with the support of our school librarian Mr. Sonneville, took our advisory classes through an enlightening tour of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. The students examined specific artifacts and participated in discussions about their significant impact on American culture and history. We are proud that this Black History Month lesson not only enriched our students’ understanding, but also strengthened our community’s appreciation for the profound contributions of African American heritage while allowing students to lead in this work.

Great job this season by all of our Del Mar basketball teams. This is the last week of the regular season. Playoffs start next week. We will post the playoff schedule on our website when we receive it. Go Dragons!!!

We are looking forward to a busy six weeks of learning at school before our next scheduled time off for Spring Break. As we near the end of our second trimester, we sometimes see students feeling stress with final assignments. I recommend you talk to your student at home about how to manage their time and handle any stress that may come up.

Warmly,

Chad Stuart
Principal

Read Across America

Read Across America is a week-long celebration of reading. This year, it takes place the week of March 3rd. Read Across America’s goals are to motivate kids to read, to celebrate the joys of reading, to promote reading fun and discovery and to celebrate a nation of diverse readers.

At Del Mar, we believe and support the value of reading. We have created a special bell schedule for March 3 to allow students designated quiet reading time that day. We have asked our students to bring their own physical books (rather than an e-book or digital reading material) to read on that day. Students are encouraged to visit our school library to find a book if they don’t have one. Additionally, they are welcome to bring a pillow or blanket to create a comfortable reading environment as they settle in and enjoy this extended period of literary appreciation.

Parents/Guardians, if you have a book at home that you think may be of interest to your child, we encourage you to offer it to them as a suggestion and also to please ensure they bring a book to school on Monday to read
Thank you for helping us foster a love of reading at Del Mar!

End of Trimester 2

March 7th marks the end of our second trimester. We recommend that you discuss with your child how to finish the trimester strong and ensure they have completed all of their required assignments. Report cards will be emailed home and posted on Alma the week of March 17th

Exciting School Events on the Horizon

We have a few fun activities for our students coming up:

  • As stated above, basketball playoffs start next week. The schedule will be posted on the Del Mar website when it is released.
  • March 6th our leadership class students host a Pep Rally during Advisory. We will recognize our Dragons of the Trimester at that rally.
  • March 14th is the school dance. Please see details below!

Upcoming Track Meets

Friday, April 25th is the Southern Marin area track meet. Students will be invited to participate in the meet if they qualify in one or more events in our Physical Education Track and Field unit, which has begun in all PE classes. The final track meet for those who move on after the area meet is on Friday, May 2nd.

Staff Spotlight- Dr. Kover

By Leadership students: Tala, Jack, Anna and Rory.

This week's staff spotlight is Del Mar’s very own school psychologist Dr. Kover! Dr. Kover, who grew up in the bustling city of New York, had two parents that were educators. In New York, Dr. Kover enjoyed taking the subways to his high school in Manhattan. As a kid he loved learning new things as his parents were teachers. Dr. Kover attended college at Dartmouth in New Hampshire. Later on, Dr. Kover co-founded a bagel company called Schmendrick’s bagels in San Francisco, having pop-ups all around the city and gaining experience in the field of baking. As the company grew, these Brooklyn style bagels were voted the best in San Francisco for the year!

At the start of Dr. Kover’s educational career, he started as an English teacher. Soon after, he found out that he wanted to learn how to help students that are having a hard time. Dr. Kover decided to go to graduate school at UC Berkeley to receive his PhD in psychology. While at graduate school, he even went on a trip to India to interview kids for one of his studies. He then started interning under our previous school psychologist Dr. Gold where he also attended school with him.

Later on, Dr. Kover was then introduced to Del Mar, he quickly acclimated to the Del Mar society and enjoyed the kind and loving community of the staff members. Every day, he loves getting to know kids better and building strong connections with the students. He is a very loving and empathetic person who is always willing to talk with anybody. He is proud of all the clubs he has led such as the GSA and the TEA club. Something he looks forward to every year is meeting new students and leading the opening assembly. One thing he would like to change here at Del Mar is the strong academic pressure on the students as well as bullying. At home, Dr. Kover has two children, a second grader and a seventh grader, who he loves very much. Dr. Kover loves traveling and road tripping to national parks to enjoy the wilderness. If Dr. Kover could pursue another job; he would be a baker. Dr. Kover is very proud of his academic accomplishments like his PhD. If you ever need to talk to someone and be listened to, don’t hesitate to reach out to our school psychologist Dr. Kover!

Attendance Instructions- Arriving Late? Leaving Early?

Leaving before end of day? If your child must leave in the middle of any class, please send your child with a note to give to the teacher so they can excuse themselves in the middle of class. We do not ever want to call into a classroom unless there is an emergency, so please plan accordingly! If you need to pick your child up for any reason, please try to do so between classes, and be sure to remind your child to come to the office to meet you there, without needing a call from the office. Any student leaving before the end of the day must be signed out by their parent or an authorized adult.

You'd like your child to sign out on their own? If you would like your child to excuse themselves and head out on their own, we must get that request in writing to delmar@reedschools.org and your child will need to sign out in the office

Student arriving late? Students arriving late to school must sign in with the office and get a tardy slip before going to class.

Full Day Absences: Please call the office on the day of your child's absence by 8:00 a.m. (435-1468, ext. 1) or email delmar@reedschools.org. This will eliminate the need for a call from the office. We expect students to attend school, unless there is an excused absence-for illness, injury, a medical/dental appointment or a religious holiday. All other absences are marked "unexcused." Unexcused absences do not excuse a student from the classroom assignment. All assignments are available on the teacher websites. It is the student's responsibility to check the websites and make up for missed work once they are healthy.
