Dear Reed Families and Caregivers,

Happy New Year! It is always a delight to welcome students back from the winter break and watch them dive into learning with enthusiasm. It is rewarding and powerful to see firsthand the growth and development our Reed Raccoons demonstrate at this time of year. We see students beginning to add more details to pictures and stories, tackle problem solving with greater independence, internalize foundational skills, develop stronger and more effective communication skills, and much more. It truly is an exciting time. We hope you are noticing it too!

Warmly,
Mary Niesyn & Staff

Reed School PreK & Kindergarten Registration: January 22-24
PreK/Kindergarten online registration opens Wednesday, January 22 for incoming students new to Reed School. If you have an incoming, age-eligible PreK or Kindergarten child, please register beginning January 22.  Early registration is important so we can plan and secure staff and classrooms. Please also pass this along to any friends and neighbors in the district.

*Current PreK & Kindergarten students do not need to re-register. Current students will remain automatically enrolled.

Specialist Corner: Art Note from Ms. Caldwell

Happy New Year! We are finishing up projects and beginning new ones. Most grades have completed their experience with watercolor. Tempera painting is next up. I am so proud of their artistic progress and the seriousness with which they work.

PreK: We have completed exploration of printmaking and texture. We will finish up our unit with an individual printmaking project using ink and texture rollers.

Kindergarten: We are finishing up our identity unit with our initials using dot art. Please tell your child how and why you chose their name as I write their story in their framed project. Fireworks with tempera paint will begin in the next few weeks.

1st Grade: We have finished our watercolor ladybugs and they are adorable. Students have worked really hard and are becoming serious artists. We will begin a unit on the life and work of Kandinsky. We will complete an abstract art project using fluorescent tempera paint and geometric shapes inspired by Kandinsky.

2nd Grade: We have finished our watercolor perspective trees and they are magnificent. Students put a lot of effort into this project and it shows. We are beginning a project of Savannah at Sunset using tempera paints focusing on the contrasting warm and cool colors.

A Note from our School Nurse:
Respiratory and gastrointestinal viruses are spreading widely this time of year. Please remember a few tips to help keep our schools healthy:

  • Keep your student home if they are feeling sick. Students must be without fever, vomiting and diarrhea for over 24 hours without medication before returning to school.
  • Keep your family up to date on flu, COVID-19 and RSV vaccines (it’s not too late!)
  • Make sure your children get plenty of sleep each night (9-12 hours)

– Nurse Mankin

THANK YOU!

A huge thank you to our generous Reed community for your contributions to our Reed Staff Appreciation Holiday Potluck and Adopt A Family gift drive last month!

This amazing group provided 347 gifts to 9 Marin families, bringing joy to so many. We received a heartfelt, handwritten thank you card from each family.

A special shout out to Liana Johnson and Leigh Nile for organizing our Adopt A Family gift drive, to the volunteers who helped transport the gifts to the Adopt a Family office, and to our Staff Appreciation Team who arranged a beautiful holiday lunch spread for our Reed teachers and staff!

2024-2025 Yearbooks

For the first time this school year, you can reserve your child’s yearbook today!

New Year Volunteer Opportunities

Recess Coordinator - partner with Mr. Kaiser to recruit parent volunteers for recess on Fridays. This volunteer role requires that you are at Reed each Friday to organize games for the students. If you're interested or want to learn more, please contact Michelle Thomsen, PTA Site Chair, at mmsmith8@yahoo.com.

Reed's Staff Appreciation Team is looking for a few more volunteers! This is a great opportunity to meet other Reed parents and show appreciation for our wonderful Reed teachers, specialists, aides and staff. If you're interested or want to learn more, please contact Michelle Thomsen, PTA Site Chair, at mmsmith8@yahoo.com.

Warm Coat Drive

Winter is here and many families are in need of warm coats to stay comfortable and healthy during the colder months. We’re launching a Coat Drive to collect new or gently used coats for Holy Family Day. Holy Family Day Home provides family support services and affordable childhood education for struggling families in San Francisco.

How You Can Help:

  • Donate new or gently used coats for adults and children sized 4 and up.
  • Free of tears, holes, stains, or broken zippers
  • No denim or leather
  • Bring donations to Reed School between January 21st and February 3rd. Look out for the collection rolling racks near the lost and found at school.

Your generosity will make a huge difference in ensuring families stay warm this winter. Contact Shannon Everley (smeverley@gmail.com) or Summer Singh (summerannsingh@gmail.com) with any questions or for more information. Thank you for your support!

A big PTYay to the Reed Food Drive Co-Chairs, Shay Kenjora and Sarah Mastrorocco. Shay and Sarah did an amazing job bringing the Reed School community together to support the SF-Marin Food Bank. They collected food donations daily from the bins and drove all 567 pounds of food to the SF-Marin Food Bank in San Rafael. Thanks to generous parents like Shay and Sarah and all of our PTA volunteers, the RUSD PTA can continue its mission to enrich the lives of our children and the school community.
