Principal's Message

Families,

Happy New Year! On behalf of the entire faculty and staff, I want to extend a warm welcome as we begin an exciting new year here at Del Mar Middle School. We are thrilled to have your child with us as we enter 2025, and we are looking forward to a year of growth, learning, and community.

We ended December with great energy and some winter fun. We had a terrific “December Dash” (fun run) on the last day of school. Thank you to all of our student participants and to our physical education teachers for making it such a great event. We also had a winter concert, performed during Advisory and also in an evening performance (pictures below). Congratulations to music teacher Ms. Christine Derby, as well as all of our musicians and singers for a great concert!

Tomorrow morning is our site PTA meeting at 8:30 AM in our library. I hope to see some of you there.
We are filled with excitement and anticipation as we look ahead. Thank you for your continued partnership and commitment to making this school year a success for every student. Wishing you all the best in the new year. Here's to a great start to 2025!

Warmly,

Chad Stuart
Principal

Staff Spotlight- Mr. McDonald

By: Jack, Tala, Rory, and Anna  (Del Mar Leadership Students)

This week's staff spotlight is our very own 6th grade science teacher, Mr. McDonald! Mr. McDonald was born in Santa Rosa and grew up with five siblings. As a child he was immersed in nature within Santa Rosa from the very beginning. In Santa Rosa he and his family went on occasional backpacking trips that ultimately grew his love for science and the outdoors. While backpacking Mr. McDonald said that he had many incredible experiences such as coming face to face with a bear, hearing wolves howl through the night, going canoeing, and watching birds. Mr. McDonald pursued his passion for the outdoors at Carleton College. One thing Mr. McDonald is very proud of his book about the survivors of World War Two called Tin Can Sailors Save the Day. While writing the book he got the chance to interview real life survivors from World War Two who gave him first hand accounts of their stories to help him write the book. After he graduated from Carleton College Mr. McDonald became very passionate about karate. At the age of twenty three Mr. McDonald traveled across the world to Tokyo, Japan to pursue his endeavors as a karate student. For four years he lived in Tokyo studying karate and developing a whole new lifestyle. Living in Japan really opened his eyes to the differences of other countries from the United States. He said that one major difference in Japan was the culture and ways of life. He also stated that the ways of transportation were much different. Almost everyday he took a packed bullet train to and from his destinations. At the age of twenty seven he returned from Tokyo with a new perspective of life and began his career in teaching.

Mr. McDonald has only worked at Del Mar for two years, but is already thought of as one of the most helpful and significant teachers in the community. Mr. McDonald’s favorite part of his job is that he can do what he loves on a daily basis which is teaching and developing kids through his knowledge of the world. He has worked as a teacher for twenty eight years and has worked through different school districts. Mr. McDonald states that Del Mar is different from other schools because the community is very strong, the students come to school ready to learn, and his colleagues make the job enjoyable and easier for him. Mr. McDonald says the students at Del Mar have a lot of curiosity and always want to learn more. Mr. McDonald strives every day to push the students to be their best and to exceed in the fun but challenging curriculums he teaches. One thing he would like to add on to his teaching at Del Mar is projects that use the knowledge he teaches to solve real life problems. Last year he had his students build towers that would withstand the impacts of an earthquake. Every Friday during lunch Mr. McDonald runs a soccer club on the field. So if you ever want to engage with new kids and have fun during lunch, look for Mr. McDonald out on the field and join in on competitive and inclusive games of soccer!

A big PTYay to the Reed Food Drive Co-Chairs, Shay Kenjora and Sarah Mastrorocco. Shay and Sarah did an amazing job bringing the Reed School community together to support the SF-Marin Food Bank. They collected food donations daily from the bins and drove all 567 pounds of food to the SF-Marin Food Bank in San Rafael. Thanks to generous parents like Shay and Sarah and all of our PTA volunteers, the RUSD PTA can continue its mission to enrich the lives of our children and the school community.

Bell Schedule

Our 2024-25 regular bell schedule can be found HERE.

Attendance Instructions- Arriving Late? Leaving Early?

Leaving before end of day? If your child must leave in the middle of any class, please send your child with a note to give to the teacher so they can excuse themselves in the middle of class. We do not ever want to call into a classroom unless there is an emergency, so please plan accordingly! If you need to pick your child up for any reason, please try to do so between classes, and be sure to remind your child to come to the office to meet you there, without needing a call from the office. Any student leaving before the end of the day must be signed out by their parent or an authorized adult.

You'd like your child to sign out on their own? If you would like your child to excuse themselves and head out on their own, we must get that request in writing to delmar@reedschools.org and your child will need to sign out in the office

Student arriving late? Students arriving late to school must sign in with the office and get a tardy slip before going to class.

Full Day Absences: Please call the office on the day of your child's absence by 8:00 a.m. (435-1468, ext. 1) or email delmar@reedschools.org. This will eliminate the need for a call from the office. We expect students to attend school, unless there is an excused absence-for illness, injury, a medical/dental appointment or a religious holiday. All other absences are marked "unexcused." Unexcused absences do not excuse a student from the classroom assignment. All assignments are available on the teacher websites. It is the student's responsibility to check the websites and make up for missed work once they are healthy.
