Veterans Day (NO SCHOOL) Monday, November 11 | Parent Teacher Conferences November 12-15 12:00pm dismissal | Ruby Bridges Walk & Roll to School Day Wednesday, November 13 | Reed PTA Meeting Wednesday, November 13 9:00am in Room 17 | Annual Reed Racoon Food Drive (details below) November 18 - 22 | Thanksgiving Recess (NO SCHOOL) November 25 - 29 | Dear Reed Families and Caregivers, It was wonderful seeing so many Reed parents and caregivers at our Halloween parade last week. Believe it or not, we had over 850 of us all together to share the fun! Thank you to the many volunteers for organizing festive classroom celebrations. It certainly was a “spook-tacular” day! We now look forward to the season of gratitude & giving at Reed School. Reed teachers and staff are working together to create a variety of lessons and activities for students to experience this throughout the season. In addition to classroom activities focused on gratitude and giving, our amazing PTA is working hard to create school wide opportunities for students and families to express and share gratitude. One important school wide activity is the Reed School Holiday Food Drive. The Marin Food Bank is in need of donations of all kinds of foods to ensure that families in need will enjoy a holiday meal. Toward this end, we are asking each family to participate in our Holiday Share. Please make sure your child is actively involved in the planning, selecting, purchasing, and donating of the items. Participation in the entire process will help your child internalize these positive character traits. Collection bins will be located outside of our front office November 18-22. Please take a look below for additional activities and fun that have taken place at Reed School during the past few weeks. Warmly, Mary Niesyn & Staff Youth Truth Family Survey Coming October 28 - November 22 Please take a moment to complete the Reed School Youth Truth Family Survey. The feedback and personal perspective we receive from our Reed families across several aspects of school functioning is invaluable and we use it at both the school and broader district level to inform, strengthen, and expand our practices. Thank you in advance for your participation! | Halloween Fun at Community Time | Parent/Teacher Conference Schedule Friday, November 8 is the end of Trimester 1. Parent/teacher conferences will take place Tuesday, November 12 – Friday, November 15. School dismissal time is 12noon. Buses will continue to operate. School lunch will be available “to-go” for students. Trimester 1 Report Cards Your child’s Trimester 1 report card will be emailed directly to you on the afternoon of Friday, November 8. It also will be available through Alma. Please look for an email that was sent out to all families on Tuesday, November 5. It included instructions for accessing Alma and a letter explaining the report card format. Specialist Corner: Music Notes from Ms. Balfe In music class students have been singing folk and seasonal songs, dancing, and playing music games. During singing time, students often have an opportunity to share their voices as soloists, and I am so proud of them for "putting their brave in front" for this. Songs you may have been hearing around your house in recent weeks include: This Little Light of Mine, Around the Block, and a Pumpkin Patch chant. Second graders are currently preparing songs and dances for their music presentation in December. For those families new to Reed School, I wanted to share that there is a morning music presentation scheduled for parents at each grade level. Please note the date(s) listed below and I'll hope to see you there! Dec. 11th: 2nd grade Feb. 12th: 1st grade April 2nd: Kindergarten June 4th: PreK | 2nd grade Community Time Leaders leading the school in singing, "Around The Block" | Lice Reminder Head lice are a common nuisance among school-aged children. This is a friendly reminder to routinely check your child for live lice and nits (eggs) at home. We encourage you to read this head lice flyer for parents and nit-combing guide from the California Department of Public Health for helpful tips about how to prevent your child from getting lice, how to check your child for lice, and how to treat your child and your household if lice and nits are found. | The Annual Reed Racoon Food Drive! | From November 18-22, bins will be located outside the front office and near the front gate. Last year, we donated over 1,500 pounds. Let's try to exceed that amount this year. Thanks in advance for your generosity! Packing food boxes for those in need is another way to help and a great way for our kiddos to roll up their sleeves and get involved! Sign up on the San Francisco-Marin Food bank website: https://www.sfmfoodbank.org/volunteer/ Click ‘Warehouse’ to pick your volunteer site and register. Pre-registration is required. Kiddo volunteers must be 8 years old to volunteer at the SF warehouse and 11 years old at the Marin warehouse. Ruby Bridges Walk & Roll to School Day Walk and Roll for Ruby on November 13. Join a national celebration of the spirit of Ruby Bridges who, as a six-year old African American in Louisiana in the 1950s, successfully helped integrate an all-white school. It was Ruby’s daily walk to school, despite bullying and threats, that we’ll celebrate by walking, rolling, carpooling, or parking-and-walking to school. Come to the Safe Routes to Schools welcome table on the morning of November 13 to receive a prize! Please sign up HERE to help distribute prizes to participating students! | Buddy Up Contest Safe Routes to Schools’ BUDDY UP contest recognizes groups of students who walk (park-and-walk), bike, carpool, or ride the bus together. Now through November 15, two or more students who actively travel to or from school together can be entered in the contest. Tell us your success story on the contest form. Habits are more likely to stick when families support each other. There is also safety in numbers and groups are more visible to drivers. Best of all, friendships and fun memories are formed! A $50 prize will be awarded to five winning groups. Notifications will be sent out in mid November. | Coming Soon…Adopt a Family Reed PTA is partnering with Adopt A Family of Marin to support families (shared across classes in each grade) in the Marin community during the holidays.
