Principal's Message

Families,

It was wonderful to see so many of you at our Back-to-School Night! We hope you left feeling a stronger connection to our school community. As an institution of learning, we strive to create an environment where every student feels safe and has a true sense of belonging. We sincerely appreciate your presence and engagement as we discussed the ways we aim to make that happen.

As mentioned during my presentation, one of our key goals this year is to enhance communication with families, particularly in keeping you informed about your child’s progress in their classes. The information is readily available, but we understand it can sometimes be challenging to navigate. To assist with this, our teachers have created a “Guide to Alma” video, which will walk you through everything you need to know to track your student’s academic progress.

In this week's NewsFlash, we are also excited to introduce a new feature: the “Staff Spotlight.” Each edition, members of our leadership class will interview a staff member and write a brief bio, so you can get to know the dedicated people working with your students. Our first spotlight is featured below!
Thank you again for being a part of our community. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Sincerely,

Chad Stuart (he/him)
Principal

Mid-Trimester Progress Reports

We are approaching the midpoint of our first trimester for the school year. In lieu of progress alerts, our teaching staff are updating their gradebooks and providing specific feedback with regards to each student's habits of learning. All progress will be updated in ALMA by the end of the day on October 4th. In addition to the video provided above, you may review this short video on how to access and review your student's progress in ALMA. Should you need help accessing ALMA, please visit this site: https://help.reedschools.org/

Student Interview Staff Spotlight: Khanh Tu

We interviewed Khanh Tu, a custodian here at Del Mar who has worked for five long school years. He works day and night to make Del Mar a cleaner and better place. He is originally from Vietnam and came to America with his sister to find a better life. In Vietnam he was a geography, history, and math teacher. Once he arrived in America he worked at Dominos Pizza before finding a job in the Reed Union School District as a custodian. Every summer he looks forward to traveling back to Vietnam to see his relatives and his friends.

Every morning, Khanh Tu wakes up at 3:30 AM and arrives at Del Mar at about 4:00 AM to start his work day. He thinks Del Mar is a beautiful campus and is very grateful to work here. When he arrives on campus he repairs and cleans to prepare for the upcoming day. Even during the summer, Khanh Tu is working here with a large group of people to make the campus the best it can be for every upcoming school year. Mr. Tu is a very humble and hardworking person who is a key factor for the success and development of Del Mar. He always shows up to campus with a smile on his face and looks forward to the job every single day. He believes there are no major problems here at Del Mar but would like to see students clean up more after themselves to show respect to the campus and student environment. If you see Mr. Tu around campus, make sure to express your gratitude for his dedication to the Del Mar community and beautification of our everyday campus!

Parent/Community Expertise Form

As was communicated in our last NewsFlash and again at Back-to-School Night, we are looking for more ways to leverage the expertise of our parents, guardians and community members in terms of what our students are learning. With that, we are trying to get a bank of contacts from our community that lists their field of work and/or area of expertise. If we ever need a guest speaker, a panel of experts or a resource, we would reach out to these people to see if they are interested in joining us. If you are willing and interested, please add your name to this list using THIS link. If you know of anyone or any organization in the community who would be of value to add to our list, please share the link with them to add to our bank of names and resources.

New Rules on eBikes/Bike Registration

NEW Information on Super73 e-Bikes - RUSD received updated information from our law enforcement partners that Super73 e-bikes (except for the K1D model) are not classified as Class 2 e-bikes even though they are branded as Class 2. Any e-bike that has the ability to emit power in excess of 750w or has a throttle that enables it to travel faster than 20mph is legally classified as a motorized bicycle/moped or electric motorcycle.” (CA Veh Code 312.5). Because of this classification, a driver’s license is needed and therefore students can not ride these bikes on a school campus.

Our plan is to give families with Super73 eBikes some time to find other means of transportation for their student(s). We apologize for this inconvenience. With that, we will begin enforcing no Super73s on our campus beginning November 4th. As a reminder, we already do not allow any Class 3 e-bikes or e-scooters on campus.

REMINDER information on all bikes - we have begun handing out stickers indicating that a bike is registered. All bikes on our campus must be registered. If you have yet to register your child’s bike, you must do so and provide proof of registration to the main office. Register your bike at THIS LINK and be sure to email the confirmation to lgrinnell@reedschools.org

Garden Club-Request for Volunteers

The Garden Club needs your help! Over the past few years, it has become increasingly challenging to maintain our school garden at the level it deserves—a vibrant, educational, and sustainable space for our children to learn and grow.

Our vision is to create a welcoming, safe environment where students can gain hands-on experience with nature, fostering important life skills like responsibility, healthy eating, environmental stewardship, and community building. To achieve this, we’re asking for extra hands to help us revitalize and maintain the garden throughout the school year. Whether you can assist during school hours, after school, or on weekends, your involvement would be invaluable.

If your time is limited, donations of tools, equipment, and any garden essentials will contribute directly to the garden’s success, allowing it to thrive and match the beauty of our campus surroundings.

Together, let’s make Del Mar’s garden a flourishing space for our children and community. Thank you for your support!

If you’d like to lend a hand. Please contact  Denise Orozco at dorozco@reedschools.org

Street Smarts-From Safe Routes to School

A primary concern at our school is student safety. We encourage students to report any incident of physical or emotional safety related to themselves or other students. This helps us address the issues immediately. While we would like to speak with the reporting student in person regarding the details, we understand that not all students  feel comfortable reporting incidents. With that, we have a confidential reporting button on our school website. In addition, there is an anonymous tip box located outside the front office on campus. Please encourage your student to report any unsafe incidents they experience or witness this school year in the main office or by using the confidential reporting button on the website or the box outside the door of the main office.

Walk/Ride to School Day!

Wednesday, May 8th, is National Bike to School Day! Please encourage your student to BIKE, WALK, SKATEBOARD, or SCOOTER to school. If you live FAR away, consider Parking and Walking. Active travel is great exercise, it reduces traffic and pollution and it’s FUN! All who walk or roll will be entered into a raffle to win one of two $25 gift cards to Cinemark Movie Theaters. They will also receive a delicious organic energy bar from JAMBAR!

Bell Schedule

Our 2024-25 regular bell schedule can be found HERE.

Attendance Instructions- Arriving Late? Leaving Early?

Please call the office on the day of your child's absence by 8:00 a.m. (435-1468, ext. 1) or email delmar@reedschools.org. This will eliminate the need for a call from the office. We expect students to attend school, unless there is an excused absence-for illness, injury, a medical/dental appointment or a religious holiday. All other absences are marked "unexcused." Absence does not excuse a student from the classroom assignment. All assignments are available on the teacher websites. It is the student's responsibility to check the websites and make up for missed work once they are healthy.

Students arriving late to school must sign in with the office and get a tardy slip before going to class.

If you need to pick your child up for any reason, please try to do so between classes, and be sure to remind your child to come to the office to meet you there, without needing a call from the office. If your child must leave in the middle of any class, please send your child with a note to give to the teacher so they can excuse themselves in the middle of class. We do not ever want to call into a classroom unless there is an emergency, so please plan accordingly! Any student leaving before the end of the day must be signed out by their parent or an authorized adult.
