Principal's Message

Families,

I hope this finds you well. I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude for the support you've given to our students and staff as we embarked on this new school year. A sincere appreciation to our Del Mar staff (pictured below) for all they did to open this school year successfully.

The first few days have been nothing short of exceptional. Our students have returned to campus with enthusiasm and a positive attitude, demonstrating remarkable resilience as they navigate the challenges and opportunities that come with a new school year. Their eagerness to learn and engage in school activities has been truly inspiring. Our teachers and staff have worked tirelessly to create a welcoming and supportive environment, fostering a sense of belonging and resilience among our students.

Thank you again for your continued support. I look forward to a wonderful year ahead filled with growth, learning, and success for all.

Our NewsFlash will come out every other week on Wednesdays. I recommend you read each edition in full when it comes out so you can keep up to date with what’s happening at Del Mar.

Sincerely,

Chad Stuart (he/him)
Principal

Back to School Night ~ September 12th

Our Back-To-School Night is Thursday, September 12th. We will start at 5:00 PM in our outdoor amphitheater with a kick-off of information by our principal, Mr. Chad Stuart, as well as other presenters. Parents will then visit each of your child's classrooms, beginning promptly at 5:30 PM with 1st period. You will be in each classroom for 7 minutes and then move to the next class, following along with your child's MONDAY schedule, periods 1 through 7 and then Advisory.

All 6th grade parents (and new 7th/8th grade parents) are invited to come to the gym at 4:45 PM for a 15-minute bootcamp presentation by some of our teachers about how to operate Alma and keep up with your students' workload.

Back to School Night is a child-free event.

More information about Back-to-School night will be sent out prior to the event.

Student Clubs/Fall Sports Sign Ups (Also-see Athletics Below)

Del Mar Clubs

Clubs will be starting soon! This is a terrific way for students to get involved in school outside of the classrooms. Information about lunchtime clubs has been emailed to students and announced in Monday’s Student Bulletin. Here is a link to the list of clubs. Longer descriptions were emailed to students in the Student Bulletin.

Fall Sports

It was announced in the Student Bulletin that the Del Mar Cross Country team is starting up soon. Students are asked to sign up in the office and try to attend the first meeting/fun run after school this Thursday. See below for more sports news!

Upcoming Assembly - Local Author, Jennifer Choldenko

Del Mar is thrilled to have acclaimed author Gennifer Choldenko speak to our students on September 6th (Friday) at 11:30 AM.

With more than 2 and a half million books sold, Gennifer’s best known Tales from Alcatraz series, has been called “A cornerstone series in contemporary children’s literature.” Al Capone Does My Shirts — the first book in the series — was a Newbery Honor Book and the recipient of twenty other awards. All four books in the series were Junior Library Guild selections and received many starred reviews. Gennifer’s newest novel: The Tenth Mistake of Hank Hooperman came out in June. Gennifer will talk about the new book, being a writer, and the importance of RESILIENCE (our school’s 2024/25 theme).

If your student owns one of Gennifer’s books, bring it with you next Friday to have it signed! If you would like to order one of her books, you can do so through Book Passage using this link. Please put “Del Mar Middle School” in the Comments section of the online order as our school receives a percentage of the sale. Additionally, our librarian (Mr. Sonneville) can pick up the book from Book Passage and bring it to school if your order is in before September 4th.

Supplies/Locks/PE Uniforms/iPads/Donation

Your student should have received initial supplies and their iPad/charger. If they have any needs or questions regarding supplies, please urge them to stop by the office.

If your student has any issues with their iPad, please contact help@reedschools.org or have your student go to the Tech Office which is Room 17A (between rooms 16 and 17).

Thanks to those who donated towards our supplies! While state law does not allow school districts to charge fees to students for educational activities, we would appreciate a donation to help support supply expenditures. All contributions are voluntary and all students will be given supplies whether you donate or not. A voluntary donation of up to $35.00 is appreciated but not required, to help defray costs of the supplies. The donation can be paid in cash or a check made out to “RUSD” at Orientation or any time at the school office, or use this SchoolPay link if you’d like to donate on-line.

If your student loses their school-issued lock or PE uniform, they may purchase a replacement ($5.00 for a used lock and $20 for PE shorts, $20 for PE shirt). Broken locks or incorrectly sized uniforms may be exchanged.

Cell Phones/Smart Watches-Stay in LOCKERS!

If your student has a phone or "smart watch", it will need to be powered off and left in their locker during school hours. Smart watches and cell phones are not allowed in any classroom.

If you MUST get a hold of your student, please call (415-435-1468 ext. 2) or email the Del Mar office.

PLEASE HELP YOUR CHILD LABEL EVERYTHING!! YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE HOW MANY UNLABELED LOST AND FOUND ITEMS WE ACCUMULATE OVER THE YEAR!

Universal Breakfast/Lunch Program..Plus

Water Bottle Reminder!

Breakfasts are served out of the office before school, and at the first break if anything is leftover. Just come on by the office!  Lunches are served out of the gym’s kitchen windows, starting at the beginning of lunchtime. Look for the grade level window right at the beginning of lunchtime.

Water: Please send your student to school with a filled, LABELED water bottle every day! It can get very hot at Del Mar, and the students seem to prefer water bottles to water fountains. We have a bottle filling station near our locker rooms and a brand new chilled water fountain and filling station in the quad area near the office.

**Volunteers are needed to make the distribution of lunches run smoothly! It is a fun way to lend a hand, meet new people and see what's going on at Del Mar. Please go to THIS LINK if you are willing to help us distribute lunches.**

No GrubHub, UberEats or DoorDash: Please do not have GrubHub, UberEats, DoorDash or other food deliveries sent to our campus. This became problematic in the past, with unregistered people walking on campus, and it also created distractions to our office staff.

Dropped off Lunches: Parents are welcome to drop off forgotten lunches for their students outside the office. Please note that we have free lunch every day on campus, so if your child forgets to bring lunch, they are welcome to have a school lunch. If you are dropping lunch off for your child, please use the blue shelves outside the office and be sure the lunch is well labeled. Also remind your child to look there for lunch. We do not call into classrooms about dropped off lunches.

Del Mar Spiritwear is Available for Purchase!

Bike Registration Requirement/School Bus Contact

NEW THIS YEAR - Bike Registration: in collaboration with both the Tiburon and Belvedere police departments, this year we will require all bikes and eBikes to be registered in order to be ridden to school.

**Register your students bike using this link: https://bikeindex.org/**

You will receive a confirmation email from “Bike Index” after you have successfully registered the bike. Please forward a copy of that receipt of registration to Lisa Grinnell at lgrinnell@reedschools.org or print a hard copy and have your student bring a copy to the school office. Registration stickers will be coming soon!

Bus: Information about our school bus program can be found at the following site: www.buschallenge.org and if you have questions about the buses, please email info@buschallenge.org

Safety Reporting

A primary concern at our school is student safety. We encourage students to report any incident of physical or emotional safety related to themselves or other students. This helps us address the issues immediately. While we would like to speak with the reporting student in person regarding the details, we understand that not all students  feel comfortable reporting incidents. With that, we have a confidential reporting button on our school website. In addition, there is an anonymous tip box located outside the front office on campus. Please encourage your student to report any unsafe incidents they experience or witness this school year in the main office or by using the confidential reporting button on the website or the box outside the door of the main office.

Visitor Protocol

As per district policy, all visitors on campus must submit their ID through our SchoolPass system. Please have your ID ready when you first come to Del Mar. After going through SchoolPass the first time you will be given a PIN number that makes the system quicker to use thereafter.

Del Mar Athletics

Welcome to Del Mar Athletics! We're excited to have you join our community!

Del Mar offers a wide range of sports throughout the year, and we encourage all students to participate. Our program is dedicated to enriching our campus community and fostering the positive development of our student athletes. We pride ourselves on high participation, inclusivity, and providing a positive experience for every athlete.

Our goal is to prepare our student athletes for future success while emphasizing commitment, teamwork, sportsmanship, and most importantly, fun!

Coaching Opportunities:

We couldn't do this without the incredible support of our Reed Union community. Your involvement is crucial to our success. Please consider coaching or donating your time in some capacity, even if your child isn't a Del Mar athlete.

Below are the roles that need to be filled this year:

Basketball ($2500 stipend per team)

Bell Schedule

Our 2024-25 regular bell schedule can be found HERE.

Attendance Instructions

Please call the office on the day of your child's absence by 8:00 a.m. (435-1468, ext. 1) or email delmar@reedschools.org. This will eliminate the need for a call from the office. We expect students to attend school, unless there is an excused absence-for illness, injury, a medical/dental appointment or a religious holiday. All other absences are marked "unexcused." Absence does not excuse a student from the classroom assignment. All assignments are available on the teacher websites. It is the student's responsibility to check the websites and make up for missed work once they are healthy.

Students arriving late to school must sign in with the office and get a tardy slip before going to class.

If you need to pick your child up for any reason, please try to do so between classes, and be sure to remind your child to come to the office to meet you there, without needing a call from the office. If your child must leave in the middle of any class, please send your child with a note to give to the teacher so they can excuse themselves in the middle of class. We do not ever want to call into a classroom unless there is an emergency, so please plan accordingly! Any student leaving before the end of the day must be signed out by their parent or an authorized adult.
