2023-2024 Reed School Calendar

2024-2025 Reed School Calendar

For planning purposes, please use this year's calendar and next year's calendar so that any travels fall during school holidays and students are in attendance on school days. Thank you!

Dear Reed Families & Caregivers,

With the excitement of summer holiday only a few weeks away, it is common to find ourselves focused on what is to come.  While we do share in the anticipation of all that summer brings, we find that many students can feel unsettled with change on the horizon. Young students are most successful when we all communicate clear expectations and routines that are grounded in the present moment. You can help your child remain focused and engaged at school by taking time to talk with them about their day (look below for events to spark the conversation). This sends a message to your child that today is important and every day counts!  Please also make every effort to adhere to regular bedtime routines so your child is well-rested and ready for each day!

Warmly,
Mary Niesyn & Staff

PreK Celebrates Hat Day

The creativity in PreK abounds. On Monday the students celebrated the letter “H” in their ABC countdown with Hat Day!

Kindergarten Safety Day
This morning the entire kindergarten team learned all about home and school safety from members of our local police, fire, and city public works departments. Students in every grade level had an opportunity to meet and talk to these important members of the community before the kindergarten presentation. It certainly was an important  & exciting morning at Reed School!

First Grade Visits the Farmers Market
Last week our entire 1st grade boarded buses and traveled to the Marin Farmers Market in San Rafael. Students enjoyed presentations by farmers from Agricultural Institute of Marin (AIM).  Students used their five senses while exploring and sampling produce from local farmers and specialty food purveyors. Each student practiced making a purchase and learned about weighing produce on a scale.

2nd Grade Music Performance
While our kindergarten students were out on the playground learning about home and school safety, our 2nd grade students were in the MPR giving an amazing music performance to families and friends. Please help me give a huge shout out to our 2nd grade students and our amazing Foundation sponsored music teacher, Ms Balfe for such a wonderful morning!

A Note from our Librarian Mrs. Smith

Friday, May 31 is the final deadline to return all Reed School library books. If you have lost or misplaced a book, please email Mrs. Smith: lsmith@reedschools.org

Specialist Corner: Spanish Note from Señora Mutilva

As we commence the year with exposure to the Spanish language and hispanic culture for our Reed students, I wanted to express how impressed I have been with students’ interest and willingness to try on the language! They are little sponges!

Pre-K students played “I Spy” in connection to the book “Oso pardo, oso pardo, ¿qué ves ahí?” by Eric Carle and Bill Martin Jr., and learned about numbers, colors, and butterfly stages in our unit on “La oruga muy hambrienta” also by Eric Carle. They played a board game and danced like butterflies.

The grade-level students learned about pets in connection to family. Students interviewed each other for their favorite pet, labeled family members, and guessed pet names in charades games.

Second grade club continues to learn about Spanish speaking countries around the world. They create art projects in connection with those countries. It’s a joy seeing their interest and expressions of new cultures!

I certainly hope that these kids have the opportunity to keep learning Spanish over the summer. And if your student is graduating up to Bel Aire, I’ll see him/her there!

2024-2025 Enrollment
Please email reed@reedschools.org if you will be moving out of the area and/or your PreK, Kindergartener, or 1st grade student will NOT be returning to Reed School in the fall. This information is critical as we plan for staffing, so thank you for letting us know as soon as possible.

See you on the blacktop!

Second Grade After School Playdate: June 12

Your 2nd grade room parents & PTA would like to invite you to the Bel Aire campus for a 2nd grade after school play date. It will take place at the Bel Aire playground. We will have music, snacks and drinks. Hopefully many of you will join us to mark this next chapter before we head into summer!

Our kids will soon be closing one door at Reed, and opening the next one at Bel Aire. As we all transition together, we would love to celebrate them as they move onto 3rd grade.

Event: 2nd Grade After School Playdate

Date: Wednesday, June 12

Time: 2:30-4:30pm (Optional bike train leaves Reed School after school at 1:40pm). See below.
Location: Bel Aire playground

An optional parent-led bike train is meeting at Reed School at 1:40pm. Every child must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver in order to participate. Please plan to pick up your child on the blacktop after school. Be certain to let the teacher, The Ranch, and the office know if your child will not be attending regularly scheduled Ranch classes or riding the bus that day. As always, the Reed Staff needs to be sure all children are accounted for before they exit the campus.

Please feel free to contact your 2nd grade room parent with questions.

First Grade After School Playdate: June 13

Please come join us for light snacks, outdoor games, and fun music/dancing at Belvedere Park to celebrate Reed’s 1st Grade Class on Thursday, June 13th from 3:00pm-5:00pm. Feel free to bring snacks (nut free), treats (nut free), drinks and games to share. Siblings are welcome.

* Please ensure there is at least one adult responsible for each child. This is not a drop off playdate. To coordinate carpooling, cycling or walking as a group, please contact your Room Parent. Hope to see you there!

Feel free to contact Michelle Thomsen at mmsmith8@yahoo.com with any questions.

Walk & Roll - Nominate your Bike Hero!

Nominations for the Safe Routes’ Bike Hero Award are now open until May 31st. Bike Heroes are great “roll” models: They are students who get up early to ride regularly, inspire others to bike, obey all rules of the road, and have FUN biking. Each May, parents, administrators, teachers, and friends are invited to nominate their favorite student cyclist for the county-wide award. We’re awarding $50 gift cards to two elementary students and two middle school students.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
As another school year draws to a close, let’s take a moment to express our deepest gratitude for the incredible staff who dedicate themselves to our children's success.

From our 155 dedicated teachers, specialists, and supportive classroom aides, to the principals, custodians, and administrators, each member of our school community plays a vital role in fostering a nurturing, stimulating, and safe learning environment for our students. Their hard work, passion, and commitment make a profound impact on your child’s educational journey.

To show our appreciation for everything they do, we're launching an End-of-Year Teacher & Staff Gift Fund. This fund will be divided equally amongst all staff members, offering a small token of our immense appreciation. Every contribution, big or small, will go a long way in showing our staff how much their efforts are valued.

Please note that all contributions are entirely voluntary. Thank you for your continued support and partnership!

Gratefully,
RUSD PTA Executive Board
