Dear Reed Families & Caregivers,
May is traditionally a very busy month in education, and this year is no exception. It was so lovely to start the month with our Reed School Open House. In classrooms across the campus, it was so joyful to see our Reed Raccoons sharing their learning and accomplishments with friends and family. Please help me give a shout out to our 2nd grade choir led by Ms. Balfe, for launching the evening with a beautiful musical performance. I hope you enjoyed the evening as much as we did! Speaking of musical performances, today we enjoyed a fantastic kindergarten music performance and look forward to our 2nd grade music performance taking place later this month.
Our May calendar also is filled with field trips. Our PreK enjoyed a Classroom Safari that included a visit with a sloth! Kindergarten is heading to the Discovery Museum, our 1st grade is off to the Farmer’s Market and to the Connolly Ranch in Napa, and our 2nd grade has a day planned at Bel Aire as well as a visit to the Exploratorium. Lastly, on behalf of our entire Reed Staff, I thank you for this amazing week of Staff Appreciation. We truly appreciate working with such a thoughtful and supportive community. Your kindnesses and gestures of appreciation are warmly received.
Warmly, Mary Niesyn & Staff

Specialist Corner: Music Note from Ms. Balfe
The birds are singing about spring and so are the students at Reed School! Some of the songs you may be hearing at home this month include: Seed in the Ground, A Tiny Seed, and I Love the Mountains. If you have a 2nd grader at home, you may also be hearing Moa Li Hua (Jasmine Flower). Many of these songs will be sung in the upcoming grade level performances and the students and I look forward to sharing them with you soon!
Last week, the 2nd grade chorus performed three songs at Open House, including a new favorite called I Met A Bird. This song celebrates that nature is all around us, encouraging us, and inspiring us. Singing is a wonderful way to celebrate the gift of being alive. Here at Reed School we are in full celebration mode!

Book Donation Drive - Thank You!
Incredible job Team Reed on a successful Book Drive! Along with Bel Aire, we collected a combined total of 4,578 books for The Book Exchange! These books will be distributed to children from under-resourced communities in Marin County. Thank you to everyone who participated. This was truly a record-breaking collective effort!
The Book Exchange aims to get books into the hands of students from some of Marin's Title I schools. The all-volunteer team at The Book Exchange have been happily sorting and shelving the thousands of books for the upcoming Literacy Field Trips.
If you would like more information, please visit https://www.bookexchangemarin.org/ or email Shirley Young (shirleysyoung@gmail.com), Kim Meek (kmeekfi@gmail.com) or Michelle Thomsen (mmsmith8@yahoo.com).

Field Day
The Reed Field Day extravaganza will be held on Wednesday, June 12th! This end-of-year tradition is always a student favorite and we need help to make this year’s the best one yet! Grab a friend and consider volunteering together.
There are two time slots available, from 8:15-10:15 and 10:00-11:45. All volunteers must be able to attend for the entirety of their shift, and please limit sign-up to one shift per parent.
*Second grade parents! You may want to sign up for the second shift so you can stay and watch a special 2nd Grade song right after the Field Day festivities are over!
Mr. Kaiser and the PTA team appreciate your help! Please see the Sign-Up Genius for more detail and to sign up. See you on the blacktop!
First Grade Class Playdate
Please come join us for light snacks, outdoor games, and fun music/dancing at Belvedere Park to celebrate Reed’s First Grade Class on Thursday, June 13th from 3:00pm-5:00pm. Feel free to bring snacks (nut free), treats (nut free), drinks and games to share. Siblings are welcome.
* Please ensure there is at least one adult responsible for each child. This is not a drop off playdate. To coordinate carpooling, cycling or walking as a group, please contact your Room Parent. Hope to see you there!
Feel free to contact Michelle Thomsen at mmsmith8@yahoo.com with any questions.
Walk & Roll - Nominate your Bike Hero!
Nominations for the Safe Routes’ Bike Hero Award are now open until May 31st. Bike Heroes are great “roll” models: They are students who get up early to ride regularly, inspire others to bike, obey all rules of the road, and have FUN biking. Each May, parents, administrators, teachers, and friends are invited to nominate their favorite student cyclist for the county-wide award. We’re awarding $50 gift cards to two elementary students and two middle school students.

PTYay goes out to Wendy Martin and Connie Maddox! These two uber volunteers are in their last years at Del Mar and their presence will be greatly missed. Connie is currently Del Mar Site Chair, and Wendy is VP of Communications at Del Mar and Parliamentarian for the District PTA. From holding executive roles to serving lunch to running ticket sales and concessions at the Del Mar musical (even when their own kids weren’t in it), these two have consistently and enthusiastically embodied the spirit of true volunteerism. Thank you, Connie and Wendy for your years of dedication to the PTA! We truly appreciate all you've done. Your commitment to our school community has been invaluable.
