Dear Reed Families & Caregivers,
Spring is here! This year, spring officially arrived a bit early (March 19th to be exact). With spring comes lots of excitement and an array of activities across Reed School. We are presently in the midst of two weeks of Opera in the Classroom with a visiting artist from the San Francisco Opera Guild. Be sure to read below for more information and lots of photos. On Friday, our entire school will enjoy our annual Read Across Reed event. Throughout the morning, several important members from our school and broader community will read to students in every classroom. Guest readers include members of the Tiburon Police Department, the Postmaster of the Tiburon-Belvedere Post Office, members of our RUSD Board, the Mayor of Tiburon, and more! Next week, we hope to see many of our families at our Reed School Book Fair Family Night. This is a great opportunity to connect with friends and families—old and new!
In the midst of the excitement that spring brings, students can sometimes need a little extra support developing and using positive and proactive strategies for communicating with others. We encourage parents and caregivers to carve out time to review, revisit, and look for opportunities to practice the Kimochis 7 Keys to Communication together with your child.
Warmly, Mary Niesyn & Staff

Important - Reed School PreK Registration: Age-Eligibility Window Extension for 2024-25 Reed Elementary School online registration is open for incoming 2024-2025 PreK and kindergarten students. Reed School has extended the PreK enrollment window to include all 4-year-old children (residents) who will turn 5 years old on/between September 2, 2024 and September 1, 2025.
If you are considering enrolling your child for the 2024-25 school year, please do so as early as possible, as student numbers directly impact staffing. Also, please feel free to share this information with friends or neighbors who are not yet members of our Reed School Community.
To register, please click HERE.
PreK Eligibility: Child's 5th birthday falls on/between September 2, 2024 - September 1, 2025 Kindergarten Eligibility: Child's 5th birthday must be on/before September 1, 2024
Specialist Corner: Library Note from Mrs. Smith Reed Raccoons have been very busy in the Reed library. Together, we are learning, discovering, and sharing stories about important cultural events, celebrations, and holidays including Ramadan, Nowruz, Holi, and Easter. We also are learning about important women who have made incredible contributions as part of our exploration of Women's History Month.
Students have begun their nonfiction research projects. Our 1st and 2nd grade students bring their iPad to library class and are learning to use PebbleGo to research animals or people.
April will bring additional creative work inspired by our poetry unit. This will be an opportunity for our 1st and 2nd grade students to extend their learning from the Pseads program. Additional areas of focus for the spring include: Passover, Neurodiversity Awareness, Jewish American Heritage, Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage months and more!

Sing A Story Reed School sends a sincere Thank You to our PTA for once again sponsoring Sing-a-Story Opera in the Classroom. Sing-a-Story is a component of The San Francisco Opera Guild's educational program. For the past two weeks, a teaching artist visited each classroom and led students in a singing lesson and an interactive musical telling of a classic opera story. The operas were: Hansel and Gretel (PreK & Kindergarten), The Magic Flute (1st grade), and Many Voices of Cinderella (2nd grade). What a treat it was to see our students in action. Enjoy the photos below!

First Grade Music Performance Last Friday our entire 1st grade performed an original Reed School version of the book If You Come to Earth by Sophie Blackall. This amazing collaboration included our music teacher Ms. Balfe, our librarian Mrs. Smith, our PE teacher Mr. Kaiser on guitar, and of course our 1st grade superstars!

This month’s PTYay spotlight starts with teacher, Christine Derby. Ms. Derby is the music teacher at Del Mar and is new to RUSD. She has been a welcome addition and is currently busy helping the Del Mar students with their production of Newsies, debuting next month. Want to get to know her a little better? Here are some fun facts, direct from the source:
1. I have a very large, extended Croatian family and we get together for every holiday and birthday. Family is my Favorite! 2. Music is Magic and I believe it to be an essential part of education and Life. It's the thing that nurtures us, livens our souls, and provides human connection. 3. I am a huge Disney fan. Nothing is better than working with kids than to be one yourself!
We are so lucky to have Ms. Derby as part of RUSD, and are very excited for the production of Newsies next month!

Now meet the Del Mar PTA hospitality team, Amy Dugdale and Chenin Malloy! This dynamic duo coordinates and delivers fresh, wholesome and very tasty meals and snacks to Del Mar teachers and staff. It started with Back to School Night and has been going strong throughout the year. Every month, they are up early and at Del Mar by 7:30 a.m. setting up for Thankful Thursday Nibbles. We are so thankful to Amy and Chenin and to the many generous Del Mar families that have contributed meals and baked goodies for our amazing Del Mar California Distinguished Middle School team!

Last but not least, let us introduce you to Michelle Thomsen. Michelle is an integral part of the Bel Aire PTA slate. In December, she led their school wide Adopt-a-Family initiative where Bel Aire families paid it forward by purchasing 9 family holiday wish lists. During the busiest months of the year, Michelle coordinated each class list with the room parents and coordinated parent volunteers for gift delivery. Her leadership was paramount to making this give back event a success. Michelle is also on our hospitality committee responsible for Staff Appreciation breakfasts, lunches, and holiday goodies. And from the files of "where does she find the time," she gives a tremendous amount of time to our Reed Foundation helping lead events and she donates countless hours to the success of the Foundation. Michelle does it all with a smile and a willingness to step in at the last minute to help. The PTA is so lucky to have Michelle and we are beyond thankful for her passion for making the school and PTA amazing.
