2023-2024 Reed School Calendar

2024-2025 Reed School Calendar

For planning purposes, please use this year's calendar and next year's calendar so that any travels fall during school holidays and students are in attendance on school days. Thank you!

Dear Reed Families & Caregivers,

It is hard to believe that Trimester 2 has come to a close. Over the past few weeks, teachers have been busy assessing students both individually and in small groups to measure student growth. An email with your child’s report card will be sent to you the afternoon of Friday, March 8 sharing your child’s progress to date. Be sure to view their report card from a growth mindset and celebrate their hard work and effort. We look forward to a busy and exciting final trimester. Students frequently demonstrate much growth both academically and emotionally throughout Trimester 3. It is a time when students consolidate their learning and skills; routines become more automatic. At this time of the school year, we often see boosts in their independence and self-confidence and hope you do too!

Warmly,
Mary Niesyn & Staff

Marin Humane Society Visits PreK
Amy and Rocco (a trained therapy dog) from the Marin Humane Society visited our PreK classrooms this week. Students delighted in a story of a stray dog being found, brought to the shelter, and adopted. Students also learned all about the basic needs of pets and how similar they are to our own needs! Each student had the opportunity to practice safely meeting Rocco. They also decorated recycled cardboard tubes to be used as cat toys at the Humane Society. Ask your child about it!

First Graders Learning to "Eat the Rainbow" with Farmer Tyler
Our entire 1st grade had a visit last week from Farmer Tyler and Ms. Blossom of the Agricultural Institute of Marin (AIM). Students learned about eating seasonally and identifying winter fruits (hint - they wear "jackets" like thick citrus rinds).  Did you know that a tangelo is a hybrid of a tangerine and a pomelo? Students also made Grass Buddies which will sprout grass hair. Ask your 1st grader all about their experience!

Poetry in 1st & 2nd Grades
Thanks to the generosity of our District PTA, our 1st and 2nd grade students will participate in the Blue Skies, Bright Star Science and Poetry program. Each class will enjoy 4-5 poetry lessons with guest teachers from Pseads.org

*The Blue Skies, Bright Star Science and Poetry program is an 8-week experience for students in Grades 1-8 that integrates the humanizing power of poetry and the joy and acuity of science to explore the roots of human curiosity, creativity, storytelling, and innovation. This program is currently in its 10th year, and serving over 2,000 students a year in five districts. Teachers have reported district-wide improvement in writing scores, and in collaboration with educators, this initiative has helped set new benchmarks for equity, achievement, asset-based learning, art-science integration, and community-building.

Specialist Corner: Spanish Note from Señora Mutilva

¡Bienvenidos a español! Across the campus each Friday, students are getting to know the beautiful Spanish language and cultures! Through stories and games, we practice greeting one another, welcoming the day with a song, talking about foods, learning animal names, and making animal sounds, and more. Students also are learning and practicing naming body parts with el hombre de jengibre (The Gingerbread Man) as well as family member names with tiburón bebé (Baby Shark).

In our 2nd grade Virtual Field Trip Club, students take their make-believe passports with them to travel to Spanish-speaking countries around the world. After learning interesting facts about the spotlighted country, they create beautiful works of art such as a yarn project from the Huichol people of Mexico and paper molas like those from Panama.

*As always, we are grateful to the Foundation for Reed Schools for supporting our specialists!

Bel Aire Play

Calling all Reed School families - Bel Aire's annual play is coming up March 20th - 24th! This year the play is THE WIZARD OF OZ

For those of you new to the play, here's the background: Bel Aire students (3rd - 5th grade) try out (all students receive a part) and subsequently, they attend play rehearsals after school for 3 months leading up to the play debut. With over 100 students participating, the play is a staple of our Bel Aire community.  The play is a fantastic production - professional Director, costumes, sets, props - it's a huge undertaking and a highlight for all who attend.

To purchase tickets, CLICK HERE. The Matinee on Sunday, March 24th will be a special "Reed Day at the Play” where we will acknowledge all the "future Bel Aire students" in the audience. There are 6 shows and we welcome you to attend any show that works best with your family's schedule. Do note that the play sells out every year so please snag tickets so you don't miss out!

See you over the rainbow!
