Staff Development Day (NO SCHOOL)

Monday, March 18

Dear Reed Families & Caregivers,

Last week’s Great Kindness Challenge was a HUGE success! Acts of kindness in all forms were shared and expressed throughout the campus. Students shared friendly signals with one another, created beautiful cards and letters for classmates and staff, and Mrs Hoover’s class even shared a student-created “Kindness” video at our weekly Community Time. Reed Raccoons really know that Kindness Matters! More joyful events continue right into the month of February. On February 7th classrooms across the campus will be celebrating the 100th day of school followed by Global School Playday, Valentine’s Day, and our next Spirit day: Show Your Love For Reed School. Lots of ongoing events to share and express kindness! More information on each of these events will be coming home to you from your child’s teacher.

Warmly,
Mary Niesyn & Staff

Early Pick-Ups Reminder
Parents and Caregivers, while we understand the temptation to pull your child early from school to get a headstart on the weekend and/or holiday break, please understand the challenge this creates for the classroom learning environment as well as your child’s individual learning. Classroom teachers frequently experience multiple interruptions during lessons throughout the day as students are checked out to start weekends and holidays early.  While teachers do their best to make up lost learning with students, there truly is no substitution for first time instruction. Please be mindful of the impact early leaves have on our learning community. We thank you for your understanding!

Register Now: 2024-25 Reed School PreK & Kindergarten
PreK/Kindergarten online registration is open for incoming students new to Reed School. If you have an incoming age-eligible PreK or Kindergarten child, please register as early as possible. Early registration is critical so we can plan and secure staff and classrooms.

*Current PreK & Kindergarten students do not need to re-register. Current students will remain automatically enrolled.

Specialist Corner: Library Note from Mrs. Smith

The month of January is always an exciting time for picture books due to the annual Caldecott medal and other awards announced at last week's American Library Association Youth Media Awards. At Reed, students in PreK and Kindergarten learned about the Caldecott award, read some previous winners, and learned how to identify the award on the cover of picture books.  Students in 1st and 2nd grades participated in a mock Caldecott election, voting on many different potential winners after reading the books with Mrs. Smith.  They considered how the illustrations supported the story's mood and how valuable they were to the text itself.  We were successful this year! Students and Mrs. Smith were thrilled to hear that Big, written and illustrated by Vashti Harrison, took home the medal, and several other picture books we enjoyed received the Caldecott honor.

Students were given the opportunity to design their own Caldecott medal.

Both were this year's Reed Elementary favorites!

District Message: Marin County Significant Weather Event Forecast

As you all know, Marin is forecast to receive a significant storm this evening and Thursday with the potential of high winds, flooding, and power outages.

The Marin County Office of Education (MCOE) has been monitoring this storm and assisting districts as we prepare.  We are also in close communication with involved agencies and we will pass along any pertinent information to our families and staff.

Due to the expected severity of the storm, we are taking precautions to ensure our campuses are safe for our students and staff.  Our maintenance and custodial staff have inspected the areas on our campuses, and our staff will continue to monitor conditions throughout the course of the storm.

Please know that our plan is to keep schools open as long as there are no extended power outages, flooding, or impassable roads.  Please provide yourself extra time and use extra caution as you travel to and from school. As always, everyone’s safety is our primary concern.

In the unlikely event of a school closure, we will communicate to employees and parents/guardians via email and other means of communication.

Stay safe!
