Principal's Message

Families,

On Tuesday last week, we celebrated Halloween (pictures below) with an extended lunch for a costume contest and snacks/treats for all students during Advisory (thank you PTA for helping provide that!). In addition, our staff was celebrated by the PTA with a Día de los Muertos themed lunch. Thank you to our PTA for recognizing how difficult the job of a middle school staff member is during the week of Halloween! The lunch refilled our tanks.

As I’m sure you have noticed - we have sent out a lot of information on the Youth Truth Survey this year. We are really hoping to get as many responses as possible. Your feedback on the school is important to us. You completing the survey is a key avenue for us to get that feedback. More information on the survey can be found below. Please take a few minutes to complete it.

As we approach the holiday season, I would like to remind you all of our focus on attendance this school year. Data shows that students learn at a higher level when they are physically in class. We would appreciate it if you could help by having your child in school on the days leading up to a school vacation (where we have found we have the highest number of absences). Our teacher will continue to provide instruction to our students on those days to best utilize every minute we have to educate our students.

Lastly, to help out our wonderful office staff, please review our attendance procedures (ALWAYS in the Newsflash way at the bottom-see below) for when you have to excuse your student from school. Knowing the process of how to excuse your student is appreciated by us all.

Sincerely,

Chad Stuart (he/him)
Principal

End of Trimester 1/Beginning of Trimester 2

The end of Trimester 1 is tomorrow, November 9th. Teachers will be finalizing report cards through next week. We will then be out of school for Thanksgiving recess November 20-24. Report cards will be emailed out during the week of November 27th.

The beginning of Trimester 2 starts this Monday, November 13th. All 6th grade elective wheel classes will rotate starting Monday. The wheel teachers will communicate directly with their students of the new class elective schedule.

Turkey Trot Fun Run!

November 17th is our annual “Fun Run” (also known as the Del Mar “Turkey Trot”). Thank you to our outstanding physical education department for organizing this event. We encourage as many students as possible to participate. Some participants run for speed (to get a prize and to get up on the record board), while others run with their friends for the fun of running. The key for us is to exercise for fun! All participants will receive a popsicle.

Action Item--Youth Truth Survey

Please take the survey before it closes at midnight on November 17th by clicking this link: ytsurvey.org/rusdfamily23.

Please note:

  • The survey needs to be completed in one sitting.
  • We ask that one member of each household fill out the survey.
  • If you have more than one child who attends the same school, you will need to complete the survey multiple times: for each child.
  • If you write any comments, please do not include your name or anything else that might identify you. Your responses are anonymous, and they will be combined with the responses of other parents and guardians before being shared back with school and district leadership

We sincerely thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. Your response is incredibly valuable to us. If you have any questions about the survey or our plans for how we will use your feedback, please contact Assistant Principal Michael Song at msong@reedschools.org.

Attendance Instructions

Please keep sick children home and please call the office on the day of your child's absence by 8:00 a.m. (415-435-1468, ext. 1) or email delmar@reedschools.org. This will eliminate the need for a call from the office. We expect students to attend school unless there is an excused absence-for illness, injury, a medical/dental appointment or a religious holiday. All other absences are marked "unexcused." Unexcused absences do not excuse a student from classroom assignments.
Arriving Late? Leaving Early?
Students arriving late to school must sign in with the office and get a tardy slip before going to class. No call or email is needed when students are leaving early, but please follow these instructions:If you need to pick your child up in the middle of the day, please try to do so between classes, and be sure to remind your child to come to the office to meet you there, without needing a call from the officeIf they must leave in the middle of a class, please send them with a note to give to that teacher so they can excuse themselves. We do not ever want to call into a classroom unless there is an emergency, so please plan accordingly!
