RUSD Community,

I’m so excited to say that we have students playing on the playgrounds at Reed Elementary. Thank you to the site principals and the groups that gathered to give input.  Bel Aire’s should be completed in the next week or two. Additions and touch-ups are still taking place, but it’s so exciting to see students starting to enjoy the structures. We will stay in touch about an upcoming Ribbon Cutting Ceremony!

  • Spanish Survey for Parents - Here’s a link to the short Spanish Survey for Parents/Guardians. Please let us know if you can join the Task Force. If not, we’d still love your input/ideas. Staff will receive a different link.
  • Facility Surveys - We’d love your input on future facility needs. Help us prioritize and understand your perspective. Again, the staff survey will be sent separately.

  • Communication/Marketing - Two additional steps for this priority area: modernizing logos and beginning to work on new websites. Our goal is to launch the websites in January.

At the RUSD Board Meeting on 9/19, the following topics were reviewed:

  1. Marin County School Boards Association Presentation – Ms. Denise Bohman, Trustee of the Lagunitas School District, presented information about exploring opportunities for meaningful collaboration and shared services between school districts in Marin County.
  2. Reports from the Administrative Team – Director of Maintenance and Operations, Mr. Eduardo Munoz, shared photos and a progress update on the maintenance projects he and his team completed this summer, from landscaping, to painting, roofing and floor resurfacing across RUSD campuses.  Director of Technology, Mr. Evan McKay, provided an update on the new printers and copiers, Zoom phones and platform management upgrades across all three sites.  A huge thanks to our Maintenance and Technology teams for keeping our schools clean, safe and up-to-date!
  3. Reports from the Foundation and PTA – PTA President, Mickey Hubbell, provided an update on the well-attended back-to-school-nights across all campuses and PTA is seeing a positive increase in membership this Fall.  Foundation Director, Annie Defesche, shared the new location of the Foundation office on the Bel Aire campus and provided an update on the upcoming Foundation events coming this Fall including the New Family Cocktail Party (9/27), the Run for Reed (10/11) and the Scholar’s Circle Event (10/19).
  4. Board of Trustees Update – The Board of Trustees thanked the administrative team for successful back-to-school-nights at each campus and shared updates from meetings they have attended this month including CSBA Master’s In Governance Training, MCSBA Back-to-School Dinner, Safe Routes to School, The Ranch board meeting, JLAC meeting, and the E2 Collaborative.
  5. Superintendent Update – RUSD Superintendent, Dr. Kimberly McGrath, provided an update on the Strategic Planning organizational meeting to kick-off this week, progress on the Spanish Task Force, communication and marketing initiatives underway, progress on playgrounds at Reed and Bel Aire, and fulfilling crossing guard positions for streets near Bel Aire.
  6. Review of CAASPP Testing Results – Dr. McGrath presented an update on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) test results from the 2022-23 school year compared to the previous year.  Overall, student performance is strong, ranking in the top 3% in the State.  RUSD continues to show positive results in English Language Arts, and an increase in performance results for both Math and Science.  The presentation can be viewed here.
  7. Approval of 2022-23 Unaudited Financial Report – Mr. Carlos Estrella, Chief Business Official, completed the year-end activity of “Closing the Books” for the 2022-23 fiscal year which was approved by the Board.
The next Regular Board meeting is scheduled for October 17, 2023.

We need help at Bel Aire and Del Mar every day of the school year serving nutritious lunch free of charge to every student who requests one. Please sign up for a regular once-a-month shift by adding your name to one of the slots. Volunteers work in teams of 4 so sign up with friends and make it a regular get together!  It's a great way to get on campus, see what the kids are up to at recess, and provide a vital service for our school.

International Walk and Roll to School Day is coming up on October 4th! Walk, bike, scoot, bus, or park and walk to school for a cool prize!

Get ready to join us at Reed Elementary on Thursday, September 28th from 5:00 – 7:00pm for food, music, and fun alongside a cardboard town created by Reed students. To join in the fun, students can create and decorate a structure (made of recycled materials) that represents some aspect of our town. This year’s theme will be “A Futuristic Tiburon”… think self-driving school bus or robots serving school lunch!

TOWNTASTIC is a fun, family friendly community-building event and all families, caretakers, and siblings are welcome. There will be food and beverages available for purchase. It’s a great chance to see your kids connect with friends and make new ones. We look forward to seeing you there!

We would love your help with making this event a success! If you would like to volunteer, please click here.

RUSD Mission & Vision: Each student will be challenged and inspired to reach their fullest intellectual, social-emotional and creative potential to positively impact the world.
