Dear Del Mar Middle School Families:
Our NewsFlash will come out every other week on Wednesdays. I recommend you read each edition in full when it comes out so you can keep up to date with what’s happening at Del Mar. You can go to THIS LINK to read back editions.
We have had a terrific start of the school year. Our students have come to campus ready to learn, excited to engage with their peers and happy to meet their new teachers. Feedback from our staff has been very positive and we are all excited for a fabulous school year! Please check in with your child about how the start of the school year has been going. Ask them how they can be their best self each day. We are all in this together!
It is important to me that all students feel safe and included at Del Mar. With that, I recommend that you have open and honest conversations with your child throughout the school year. If any concerns come up, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me, our assistant principal Michael Song, or any other staff member.
Back-to-School Night is next week on Wednesday, September 6th. Initial information on the event can be found below.
Thank you to the Foundation for Reed Schools and our PTA for their support to open the school year. Your support of these organizations makes a difference for our staff and students. I look forward to an excellent school year with your young learner!
Thanks,
Chad Stuart (he/him/his) Principal

Back To School Night Information

Back to School Night is next Wednesday, September 6, starting promptly at 5:10 PM (NOTE TIME CHANGE - originally reported a 5:30 start) in our amphitheater (on the back side of the gym). After the introduction, you will then follow your student’s schedule to each teacher's class for seven minute periods.
We are asking that you bring a copy of your student’s schedule with you for the night. You may take a picture or a screenshot of your students schedule. The office will be open that night! If you have any questions or needs, are lost or need your child's schedule, feel free to stop by and see office manager Laurie Kristy.

Parent Homework for Back to School Night
|
Our teachers often get questions about Standards Based Grading and Assessment, for this way of monitoring and reporting student progress can be different than previous grading systems. We ask that all parents view these two videos prior to Back to School Night to help become more familiar with our practices:

Student Class Schedules/Changes
|
Over the next few weeks, we will continue to monitor class enrollment, and class sizes. If students would like to request a change in their schedule, please be aware that there is no guarantee that the school will be able to grant the request. For any requests, please email our Assistant Principal, Mr. Song at msong@reedschools.org.

Supplies, Locks and PE Uniforms
|
Students have been provided with their school planner, 2 locks, PE uniforms and a variety of school supplies. If students lose their lock they can purchase one in the office for $5.00 and if they lose their PE uniform they can purchase a replacement for $20 for the shirt and $20 for the shorts.
If they are missing something (for example, pencil case, binder, notebook, planner, pen, pencil, eraser, binder paper, colored pencils, Sharpie, highlighter, dividers, books etc.) they can come ask in the office and we are happy to help.
Donations for Supplies
While state law does not allow school districts to charge fees to students for educational activities, we would appreciate a donation to help support supply expenditures. All contributions are voluntary and all students will be given supplies whether you donate or not. A voluntary donation of up to $35.00 is appreciated but not required, to help defray costs of the supplies. The donation can be paid in cash or a check made out to “RUSD” at any time at the school office, or use this Schoolpay link if you’d like to donate on-line. This link also works for replacement locks and replacement PE uniforms if those get lost.

Del Mar Athletics *FALL SPORTS STARTING SOON!!*
|
From Athletic Director Jason Silva:
Welcome to Del Mar Athletics! If you’re new to Del Mar, we currently offer 5 different sports over the course of the year that all students are encouraged to participate in. For most students, this is their very first opportunity to represent their school through athletic competition. Del Mar has a longstanding athletics tradition and our program is committed to enriching our campus community as well as promoting the positive development of our student athletes. We pride ourselves on high participation and inclusivity, and we aim to provide each student athlete with a positive experience. We strive to prepare our student athletes for what’s to come at the next level, while emphasizing commitment, teamwork, sportsmanship, and most importantly, fun!
Each year, our success is coupled with incredible parent and family support. As amazing as it is to have these opportunities for our students, we cannot do this without the help of the Reed Union Community! There are many ways you can help, even if it’s just for one day, one game, or one hour. Please consider coaching or donating time whether or not your child is a Del Mar athlete.
Below are the immediate roles that need to be filled: 6th Grade Volleyball Coach (stipend included, flexible schedule) 7th Grade Volleyball Coach (stipend included, flexible schedule)

Universal Breakfast/Lunch Program..Plus
Water Bottle Reminder!
|
Breakfast and Lunch: Our breakfast and lunch program are in full swing! Please go to THIS LINK to see allergen lists, and see our September menu below.
Water: Please send your student to school with a filled, LABELED water bottle every day! It can get very hot at Del Mar, and the students seem to prefer water bottles to water fountains. We have a bottle filling station near our locker rooms.
No GrubHub, DoorDash, Uber Eats etc.: Please do NOT have delivery services come to Del Mar.
Volunteers:
Volunteers are needed to make the distribution of lunches run smoothly. If you can help, please take a look at the schedule and sign up for a shift that works for you. The signups are for “teams” (i.e. “Monday Group A”) for a series of monthly shifts for the school year. Use the tabs at the bottom of the Google doc to find each day of the week. Recruit some friends and form a team!
Contact Jen Riley or Laura Smith if you have any questions about lunch volunteering. Thank you!

Transportation- New Rules/Many Thanks and ...Careful with your E-Bikes!!
|
We also had several volunteers with Safe Routes to School helping distribute flyers and remind families about safe driving and biking. THANK YOU, and please follow these driving instructions every day.
Thank you to the Del Mar community for following the requested driving and parking routes. We appreciate your cooperation to improve the flow of traffic and keep our students safe!
E-BIKES AND E-SCOOTERS
We are seeing more and more students getting to and from school using an E-Scooter or an E-Bike. For the safety of our students and in response to concerns that we have received from members of our community and staff, it is important that students and families are aware of the vehicle codes that have been written for E-Scooters and E-Bikes. Click HERE for Tiburon's E-bike regulations!

From the Marin County Office of Education (MCOE):
COVID-19 / Influenza / RSV + Vaccinations – As we await updated COVID guidance for TK-12 schools from the California Department of Public Health here is a link to updated and simplified COVID-19 Guidance for Marin County TK-12 Schools and Child Care Centers (Spanish), and the August 23, Marin County Schools SMARTER Plan which incorporate all that we have learned over the past three plus years. For the first time ever, this fall vaccines will be available for COVID, Influenza and RSV, and we want to do everything we can to take advantage of these vaccines to help protect our community. Staff and families should work with their health care providers for additional information, and assistance is available from local doctors offering free vaccines for qualifying uninsured children at Vaccines for Children (VFC).
Extreme Weather / Heat Risk Protocols– Heat Risk Activity Overview and Protocols (Spanish). These protocols and other extreme weather-related resources and links are posted and regularly updated on MCOE website.

As per district policy, all visitors on campus must submit their ID through our SchoolPass system. Please have your ID ready when you first come to Del Mar. After going through SchoolPass the first time you will be given a PIN number that makes the system quicker to use thereafter.

Bell Schedule
Our 2023-24 regular bell schedule can be found HERE.
|
Please keep sick children home and please call the office on the day of your child's absence by 8:00 a.m. (415-435-1468, ext. 4) or email delmar@reedschools.org. This will eliminate the need for a call from the office. We expect students to attend school unless there is an excused absence-for illness, injury, a medical/dental appointment or a religious holiday. All other absences are marked "unexcused." Unexcused absences do not excuse a student from classroom assignments.
Arriving Late? Leaving Early? Follow these instructions:
Students arriving late to school must sign in with the office and get a tardy slip before going to class. If you need to pick your child up in the middle of the day, please try to do so between classes, and be sure to remind your child to come to the office to meet you there, without needing a call from the office. If they must leave in the middle of a class, please send them with a note to give to that teacher so they can excuse themselves. We do not ever want to call into a classroom unless there is an emergency, so please plan accordingly!

RUSD Mission & Vision: Each student will be challenged and inspired to reach their fullest intellectual, social-emotional and creative potential to positively impact the world.
