Principal's Message

Families,

In this week’s NewsFlash, I feel the need to address the fact that inappropriate jokes and comments have found their way into our school. This is nothing new for a middle school, for at this age students are often testing boundaries and exploring humor. However, its impact can be extremely hurtful to others and it is imperative our students understand that there is no place for them at our school.

As a school community, we work hard every day to make sure students feel safe. Inappropriate behavior, including making inappropriate jokes and targeted comments, may be intended as innocent, but they highly impact others in a negative way. We have recently received reports of students making inappropriate comments about race, gender, and other sensitive topics. Your help in this regard would be most appreciated in helping us address the issues.

Additionally, we want to stress the importance of educating your child on the topic of sexual harassment. Sexual harassment can take many forms, including unwanted touching, sexual jokes, and comments or gestures of a sexual nature. This topic is discussed often by staff and administrators, including the importance of our students speaking up if they witness or experience any form of harassment. When you add your voice to our messages, you amplify its importance and share your personal values on these crucial issues.

These are not  easy conversations to have with your student. However, when you have open and honest discussions with your student about appropriate behavior and how to recognize and report any incidents of harassment, it undoubtedly has a larger impact than when we do. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that our school is a safe and respectful environment for all students. If you would like information on how to speak with your child about sexual harassment, please refer to the reference links below.

At Del Mar, we have brought in many programs that our students have participated in this year to help our students with building empathy and understanding, including Power of Zero / No Bully, Challenge Day, Soul Shoppe, and Breaking Down the Walls. We also do many kindness activities in Advisory classes, as well as our social justice activities. We plan on implementing additional age appropriate education on sexual harassment.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me directly at cstuart@reedschools.org  Thank you for making this one of the many ways you enrich our Del Mar school community to make it safer for everyone.

Please read this Flash until the end to see basketball and Mathlete photos, and to read important messages from the Foundation, the PTA and more!

Best Wishes,

Chad Stuart (he/him)

Principal

District Attorney Comes to Del Mar

Today, we were honored to welcome Marin County District Attorney Lori E. Frugoli to our school to speak with our Leadership class. Our students learned more about the criminal justice system specific to Marin County. The District Attorney aligned her presentation towards the mission of her office, which reads: “The Marin County District Attorney's Office's primary mission is promoting safety through innovative and collaborative approaches to crime prevention and prosecution while maintaining our commitment to victims' rights, offender rehabilitation, consumer protection, and public engagement.”

Basketball Recap!

We are delighted to share with you that our middle school basketball teams have had an incredible season that concluded last week! Our student-athletes have demonstrated their hard work, dedication, and sportsmanship both on and off the court. We are proud of each and every one of our basketball players for representing our school with pride and excellence. Throughout the season, they have shown great teamwork, determination, and resilience. Their impressive performances have brought many victories, and their positive attitudes have been an inspiration to us all.

Many of our teams qualified for the playoffs and had a great showing. Last week, both our 6th grade girls and 8th grade boys made it to the championship game and both finished in second place. We are very proud of both of those teams!

Congratulations to all of our basketball teams on a fantastic season! We can't wait to see what the future holds for these talented athletes.

Bell Schedule

Our 2022-23 regular bell schedule can be found HERE.

Attendance Instructions

Please keep sick children home and please call the office on the day of your child's absence by 8:00 a.m. (415-435-1468, ext. 4) or email delmar@reedschools.org. This will eliminate the need for a call from the office. We expect students to attend school unless there is an excused absence-for illness, injury, a medical/dental appointment or a religious holiday. All other absences are marked "unexcused." Unexcused absences do not excuse a student from classroom assignments.
Arriving Late? Leaving Early? Follow these instructions:
Students arriving late to school must sign in with the office and get a tardy slip before going to class. If you need to pick your child up in the middle of the day, please try to do so between classes, and be sure to remind your child to come to the office to meet you there, without needing a call from the office. If they must leave in the middle of a class, please send them with a note to give to that teacher so they can excuse themselves. We do not ever want to call into a classroom unless there is an emergency, so please plan accordingly!
