Online PreK & Kindergarten Registration (new families only) for 2023-2024 school year

Dear Reed Families & Caregivers,

Happy Spring! Yes, despite the weather, spring has officially arrived. With spring comes lots of excitement and an array of activities across Reed School. We recently enjoyed two weeks of Opera in the Classroom with a visiting artist from the San Fransisco Opera. Next week, we hope to see many of our families at our Reed School Book Fair Family Night. The Book Fair coincides with our annual Read Across Reed/Pajama Day event in which important members from our Reed Community read to students in every classroom.  Take a look below for more information on each of these springtime events at Reed School. In the midst of the excitement that spring brings, students can sometimes need a little extra support developing and using positive and proactive strategies for communicating with others.  We encourage parents and caregivers to carve out time to review, revisit, and look for opportunities to practice the Kimochis 7 Keys to Communication together with your child.

Warmly,

Mary Niesyn & Staff

Social Emotional Learning

Across Reed School we continue to focus on the 7 Keys to Communication. Lessons happen in individual classrooms, during specialists classes, and at our school-wide Community Time assembly. Students are doing a great job learning, practicing, and applying the keys. Learning to use the 7 Keys to Communication helps students gain control over their emotions, strengthen emotional intelligence, and develop a stronger emotional vocabulary. Becoming fluent in using the keys can support children in their ability to make positive choices, listen, and become independent problem solvers. You may want to look for opportunities to practice the 7 Keys together at home!

Sing A Story

Reed School sends a sincere Thank You to our PTA for once again sponsoring Sing-a-Story Opera in the Classroom. Sing-a-Story is a component of The San Francisco Opera Guild's educational program. For the past two weeks, a teaching artist visited each classroom and led students in a singing lesson and an interactive musical telling of a classic opera story. The operas were: Hansel and Gretel (PreK & Kindergarten), The Magic Flute (1st grade), and Cinderella (2nd grade). We discovered lots of budding singers and dramatists in our classrooms - see photos below!

Message from the Yellow Bus

All bus riders must have a physical bus pass in order to be able to board the yellow bus. Pass holders must hold a pass for the route on which they are traveling (e.g., pass holders on the Lime bus cannot rider the Purple bus). If your student has lost their bus pass, or it is damaged, please email info@buschallenge.org for a replacement (please provide your student’s name, bus route, and your current mailing address) by March 31. Passes will be verified and students without passes will not be able to ride the bus. Pass holders riding a bus to which they are not assigned will have their passes suspended. Single ride passes are not available. A limited number of half year passes are available (contact info@buschallenge.org for more information). Thank you for your understanding!

Walk and Roll - Win a Custom Bike!!!!

The next Walk and Roll date is Wednesday, April 5. Start your Spring off right by joining the Jedi Challenge! Stop by the welcome table on the morning of April 5th in front of the school to pick up a JEDI card and get it stamped for a chance to win a new Cleary Bike. It's easy to participate, walk, bike, scoot, carpool, or take the bus to school. If you live too far, then parking and walking is always an option too. Enjoy the nice Spring morning and count all the blooming plants.

With the warming weather and approaching Spring, Safe Routes to School would like to remind parents and students of some driving, walking and biking safety tips. Please see the attached flier on Safety Tips for Motorists and Cyclists: The Dutch Reach and Avoiding the Door Zone. This flier gives instructions on how cyclists should avoid the “door zone” when cycling near parked and stationary cars, and how car drivers and passengers should use the  “Dutch Reach” method before exiting a parked car as a driver or pedestrian to make sure there is not a quickly approaching bicycle rider.

Recess Volunteering

Mr. Kaiser needs recess volunteer help on Fridays during the lunch hour (12:05-1:10). Volunteers will help coordinate and play games with the kids. Please be sure to read the Lunch Activities Parent Volunteer Policy, which is attached to the SignUp, before the shift. Thank you!
