Principal's Message

Families,

Our 7th grade class participated in the Breaking Down the Walls program on Monday (pictures below). It was powerful to see our students engaged in relationship building practices along with our staff members. Our goal was to create more empathy and a better understanding of other people’s stories in order to have a thriving school culture. Thank you to all who helped make the program a success.

On another topic, “growth mindset” is a term used a lot in education. The learning process should be something each student values. It is something we, as parents, should also recognize as an important part of educating our children. The mental struggle can produce great results. I recently read an article and a quote by author Christopher Grobe, describing his own struggle with writing: “Each time I embark on a new writing project, I find that I’ve forgotten how to write. I type and delete sentence fragments. I list claims in a random order – then decide that most of them are indefensible. It feels awful. I feel stupid. But from long experience, I know these feelings will eventually subside. Soon, I’ll see the outline of an argument; I’ll trace it badly, then better, then well. At some point I’ll start imagining an audience whose phantom quibbles and confusions can be addressed by writing better.”  As our students are entering their final trimester of the school year, it is important that we remember that a productive struggle is an important part of the learning process.

This week the students are busy with MAP Testing (Measures of Academic Progress) in English, math and science. This data helps the teachers track the progress of our students and helps us identify areas of strength and growth in our practice.

Best Wishes,

Chad Stuart (he/him)

Principal

Attention all golfers - Del Mar's golf team is looking for parents and volunteers to help coach the team this year. If you have any experience and would like to help, please contact Jason Silva at jsilva@reedschools.org. You can also visit the Del Mar Athletics website to find out more information. This is an entirely parent run, parent driven team, so if we do not find coaches, we will not be able to field a team this year.

Bell Schedule

Our 2022-23 regular bell schedule can be found HERE.

Attendance Instructions

Please keep sick children home and please call the office on the day of your child's absence by 8:00 a.m. (415-435-1468, ext. 4) or email delmar@reedschools.org. This will eliminate the need for a call from the office. We expect students to attend school unless there is an excused absence-for illness, injury, a medical/dental appointment or a religious holiday. All other absences are marked "unexcused." Unexcused absences do not excuse a student from classroom assignments.
Arriving Late? Leaving Early? Follow these instructions:
Students arriving late to school must sign in with the office and get a tardy slip before going to class. If you need to pick your child up in the middle of the day, please try to do so between classes, and be sure to remind your child to come to the office to meet you there, without needing a call from the office. If they must leave in the middle of a class, please send them with a note to give to that teacher so they can excuse themselves. We do not ever want to call into a classroom unless there is an emergency, so please plan accordingly!

We Are Here For You!
