Online PreK & Kindergarten Registration (new families only) for 2023-2024 school year

Dear Reed Families & Caregivers,

Becoming an independent reader is an amazing milestone in a child’s life. This stage of development is something we at Reed School get to witness on a daily basis. Our school library plays an important role in our students’ literacy journey and we are so grateful to Ms. Lindsey Smith for creating such an enriching library program. To learn more about our library, read the note below from Ms. Smith.

Seeing a book come to life further enhances reading development. Thanks to the generosity of the Reed PTA, our entire 2nd grade traveled by bus to the Bay Area Children’s Theatre in Berkeley for a live performance of The Day You Begin. This book is read in many classrooms here at Reed. It supports our social-emotional curriculum with its focus on inclusiveness, being unique, and celebrating our differences. If you haven’t done so already, be sure to ask your 2nd grader all about it and enjoy the photos below.

As always, please be sure to carve out a bit of time each day to read together!

Warmly,

Mary Niesyn & Staff

Reed School PreK Registration: Age-Eligibility Window Extension for 2023-24

After a careful review of projected enrollment, Reed School is able to extend our age-eligibility window through May 2nd. If you have a child turning 5 years old between September 2nd and May 2nd and you would like them to attend Reed School’s PreK program, please register HERE as soon as possible.

Library Note from Mrs. Smith

March is here!  Not only do we have several holidays and cultural celebrations being highlighted this month in library, as well as the arrival of the spring, there is the Reed Book Fair, too.

January and February were filled with picture book studies as part of our annual mock Caldecott election; students enjoyed reading stories with Mrs. Smith, filling out ballots, and analyzing the illustrations using questions such as, "Imagine the text without pictures. Do the pictures make the story more interesting?" and thinking about the intended audience for the story. "Are the pictures meant to be funny, serious, interesting, exciting or a mix of different feelings?"

We honor Black History Month and Women's History Month with a vast collection of books, many part of our "One World, Many Stories" area. As part of our nonfiction unit for all grades we're celebrating many different people who have made incredible contributions to our world in some way. Second graders began their biography research project, while Kindergarteners and 1st graders started their "all about animals" research project.  They will all be conducting research in the library using their iPads and library books, as well as taking notes and then publishing a book using some form of technology (Seesaw or Book Creator) with Mrs. Smith's support.

Book Fair

Let’s get together and talk books because… well, #BooksBringUsTogether!

Scholastic Books and the Reed PTA is bringing the BOOK FAIR to Reed March 28-31 to bolster our libraries at home AND at school!  Not only can we help our teachers out by shopping from the Teacher Wish Boxes but we will be raising funds to provide books for Adopt a Family Marin. Stop and shop after school, online, or during the most fun event: Book Fair Family Night, Wednesday March 29th  4:00-7:00 pm.

Check out our RUSD book fair website to check the shopping hours, to order books online (while still earning points for our school) and to set up an easy e-wallet for your child to buy books without handling cash.

Last but not least, we want to thank our Reed PTA community for continually coming together and donating your time to events like this!!  We are so happy to have our in-person book fair back at Reed after so long as this is one of the students’ most beloved events, so if you’d like to help us come together for the sake of our students, staff and community, sign up to volunteer here… because after all, #BooksBringUsTogether
