Principal's Message

Families,

I often walk around our Del Mar campus observing all of the terrific educational opportunities for our students. Today I saw the following wonderful projects:

6th Grade

In our 6th grade humanities classes, students were sharing their Egypt projects with each other in a museum format. Students selected one of five traits of civilization: complex institutions (government or religion), specialized workers, record keeping, cities or technology. They then selected research questions, made a graphic organizer including “interesting facts” and constructed an artifact. Students presented their discoveries and learning to their peers.

7th Grade

In 7th grade English classes, students were presenting to the class and being interviewed by their peers, in character, from a book they had read - an autobiography, a biography or a memoir. They presented, among other things, their character's family/culture, their greatest struggles, their most triumphant moment, their education, their impact on the world, etc., all while impressively staying in character.

8th Grade

8th grade science classes have been very busy in their chemistry unit, investigating the question: where does energy come from? Last week in class, they produced hydrogen fuel for rockets. Today, the students showed the chemical reaction through combustion. The reaction is the very same process used in the rocket engines of NASA and SpaceX rockets to provide the energy needed to escape Earth's gravity.  Our 8th graders will apply these same principles of chemistry to power their own rocket in Stage 1 of the Zeus Project: a year-long mission to search for evidence of life on Jupiter's icy moon, Europa. (Editor's Note: Do NOT try the following at home):

Mid-Trimester Progress

We have approached the midpoint of our second trimester for the school year. In lieu of progress reports, our teaching staff has updated their gradebooks and provided specific feedback with regards to each student's habits of learning. If needed, please review this short video on how to access and review your student's progress in ALMA. Should you need help accessing ALMA, please visit this site: https://help.reedschools.org/

Mathletes

Congratulations to our Del Mar “Mathletes”. Both of our teams took 3rd place out of twenty teams in the countywide “Mathletes” competition. Go Dragons!!!!!

Safe School Pick-up

We are continuing to see some unsafe situations with parents picking up their students from school. Please remember that we have a lot of students leaving campus, in various means of transportation, all at the same time. With that, in collaborations with our friends at Safe Routes to School, we would like to detail two situations:

1-Picking up on Avenida Miraflores in Front of School:

Double parking in the bike lane is unsafe for kids and neighbors, makes it hard for the buses to leave campus and it is a traffic violation.

DON’T DO THIS:

Options:

A) Bike, walk, take bus

B) Pick up on Hilary or further up on Avenida Miraflores

C) Pick up across the street

D) Pick up 5 min after school ends-- less traffic!

2. Drop-off / Pick-up on Hilary Dr. Behind School:

Dropping off or picking up in this location can be dangerous for students crossing the street, especially when they don’t use the crosswalk. We ask that everyone follow the directions and map below:

A) Take Hilary Dr.

B) Right on Rowley Cir.

C) Continue around

D) Left on Howard Dr.

E) Left On Hilary Dr.

F) Get child on Hilary Dr. passenger door side

Bell Schedule

Our 2022-23 regular bell schedule can be found HERE.

Attendance Instructions

Please keep sick children home and please call the office on the day of your child's absence by 8:00 a.m. (415-435-1468, ext. 4) or email delmar@reedschools.org. This will eliminate the need for a call from the office. We expect students to attend school unless there is an excused absence-for illness, injury, a medical/dental appointment or a religious holiday. All other absences are marked "unexcused." Unexcused absences do not excuse a student from classroom assignments.
Arriving Late? Leaving Early? Follow these instructions:
Students arriving late to school must sign in with the office and get a tardy slip before going to class. If you need to pick your child up in the middle of the day, please try to do so between classes, and be sure to remind your child to come to the office to meet you there, without needing a call from the office. If they must leave in the middle of a class, please send them with a note to give to that teacher so they can excuse themselves. We do not ever want to call into a classroom unless there is an emergency, so please plan accordingly!
