Mid-Winter Break (NO SCHOOL)

February 20-24

Dear Reed Families and Caregivers,

We are off to a wonderful and busy start to the new year. A strong sense of excitement and enthusiasm permeates the campus. It is delightful to see firsthand the growth and development our Reed Raccoons demonstrate at this time of year. I hope you see it too! Please take a moment to read below to learn about some of the many things happening at Reed School throughout January and in the weeks to come.

Warmly,

Mary Niesyn & Staff

The Great Kindness Challenge • January 23-27

Once again Reed School will participate in the Great Kindness Challenge. This is a week dedicated to creating a culture of kindness and compassion on campuses worldwide. As part of an annual tradition, Reed School is participating in this proactive and positive initiative from January 23-27. Activities that promote kindness will take place in classrooms across the school. Families might enjoy using the Family Edition Checklist to spread a little extra kindness throughout the community. Together, let’s see how many acts of kindness we can share!

Reed Students Reach Great Heights •  PE Note from Mr Kaiser

As we start the new year, we shift our focus to balance, tumbling, throwing/catching, dribbling, and developing hand strength. Three great activities that improve hand strength include: magic carpet ride, forearm rollers, and the flexed arm hang.

  • Magic Carpet Ride Students sit on a “magic” carpet square and pull themselves across the gym on a rope tethered to the wall. They can choose to race or just enjoy the fun of pulling themselves.
  • Forearm Rollers are really great for increasing hand and forearm strength. Used primarily by baseball players to improve gripping a baseball bat, it’s easy to convince students of the importance of having strong hands.
  • The Flexed Arm Hang requires a lot of effort. Holding yourself with your chin above the bar using only your hands is a great way to test your moxie. Students are encouraged to use a stop watch and do their personal best to improve their time.

Climbing Rope Challenge: The exercises and activities shared above prepare students for climbing the rope and swinging on the rings.  Every Reed student will be offered the climbing rope challenge. This opportunity is carefully scaffolded and gives students a chance to build confidence and take measured risks. This activity is always a choice. Students climb as high as they feel comfortable as I carefully guide them through the process.

The MPR becomes Adventure Island: In addition to climbing the rope and swinging on the rings, Reed students participate in Adventure Island. Students  practice crossing the balance beams, climbing boulders, crawling through tunnels, and walking across small dome-shaped features we call gum drops while pretending the floor is lava. Over time, we add an additional element of challenge by balancing things on our heads. Each week we change things around and add tumbling and juggling into the activity.

Foot Stomper Fun: Foot Stompers are always a hit. With a partner or by themselves, the object is to launch a ball as high as you can and catch it. I can’t emphasize enough the importance of learning to catch with confidence. If you haven’t started playing simple catch with your kids, please start! Teach them using a soft, non-threatening object and have fun!

Reed School Safety

In December, the RUSD Safety Planning Committee (comprised of parents, teachers, staff, administration, and other community members including representatives from local fire and police) met for an annual review of the District Safety Plan. One aspect of the meeting involved a site visit and a review of site specific safety practices including schoolwide safety drills. Please take time to review the letter below. It describes the range of safety drills we practice at Reed School throughout the year:

Safety Drills at Reed School

*Please Note: Reed School will have a practice lockdown drill in late-January. Parents and caregivers will be informed one day in advance of the practice. Please read the letter linked above for tips and suggestions about talking to your child before, during, and after a practice indoor safety drill.

1st & 2nd Grade Parents Talks with Dr Van Putten

This week, several PreK and Kindergarten parents and caregivers had the chance to meet Dr. Van Putten and learn about the social/emotional, cognitive, and physical development of 4-5 year olds. First and second grade parents and caregivers are invited to join Dr. Van Putten next week. Grade Level Talks take place at 8:30am -10:00am in Room 0.

Lunch Volunteering

Are you interested in becoming a regular volunteer at Reed this Spring? Do you have friends who are interested in getting involved with you? We have two spots open on Tuesdays in our school lunch volunteer schedule for this Spring and need your help.

Shifts run once a week, every other week (just twice a month) from 12-1 pm. This is a great opportunity to see your kiddos and their friends on campus while visiting with fellow Reed parents. Take a look at the google doc to check dates and shift availability. You can fill in your name or email Dana Berhoff dberhoff@yahoo.com or Maren Jaffe Maren.iansmith@gmail.com to sign up.
