Principal's Message

Families,

It has been wonderful welcoming our students back to school after the Thanksgiving vacation. While they were excited to be back, it is clear that many are experiencing school fatigue. That is natural for us all. With that, our staff has decided to do a school-wide Wellness Day on Friday, December 16th.

Wellness Days have become a recent tradition at Del Mar. We do these to teach our students ways to take a break and cope with the stresses brought on by life and school. This year we are lucky to have, among other things, The Ranch (Tiburon’s Recreation Department) helping with fun activities, community volunteers facilitating yoga classes, and staff-led hikes up into the hills above our school.

Please remember to fill out the permission slip that was emailed out last week (and will be emailed again to those who have yet to complete it). Students will not be able to participate in the hike on Wellness Day without this permission slip on file. It also will allow students to do hikes throughout the year or go across the street for school activities  (we will always inform you in advance of any off-campus field trip activities).

Wellness Day brings up a good opportunity to discuss self-care with your child. Having worked at the high school level for the past decade plus, I can tell you that stress and anxiety can happen with all sorts of students, for all sorts of reasons (including the pressure to succeed). Having conversations with your child at home about stress and dealing with stress is highly recommended and a good initial line of communication between you and them. Please remember that we have two wonderful school psychologists, Dr. Kover and Dr. Gold, if your child is ever in need of additional support at school.

Thanks,

Chad Stuart (he/him)

Principal

Del Mar Robotics Team

Last weekend the Del Mar robotics team, led by Mr. Nate MacDonald, competed against high school juniors and seniors at the Google FTC Robotics Competition.  The girls robotics team, called Marie Curie Labs, won the prestigious Judges Choice Award and placed 10th out of 16 teams.  The boys team, called Quantum Labs, excelled with their robot nicknamed “The Whole Enchilada” because it had 5 degrees of movement, and placed 8th against high school teams that had been building robots for over 10 years.   Congratulations to both teams for their huge success as rookie teams with just 10 weeks to build their robots!

New Student Group with Dr. Gold & Dr. Kover for Students with Parents Who Have Separated

From Dr. Kover & Dr. Gold:

Drs. Gold and Kover offer a number of groups for our students to talk about different issues they are experiencing on and off campus. They are pleased to offer a small group experiences for students whose parents are separated or divorced.  We know that students who have experienced separation and/or divorce have many mixed feelings about their situations.  It often helps for them to know that they are not alone in their feelings, as well as to learn strategies to better deal with the social and emotional difficulties that can arise from divorce.

The group(s) will have about six students and will meet once each week for about forty minutes during the school day for about eight or nine weeks.  Topics will include:  understanding and communicating feelings, understanding why parents marry and divorce, living in two households, dealing with anger and guilt, and relating to dating and/or stepparents.  Of course, we will emphasize confidentiality as much as possible among the children.

If you think your child might be interested in this group, please email Dr. Gold (agold@reedschools.org) or Dr. Kover (dkover@reedschools.org) to let us know, so they can be included.  We will include as many students as possible given interest and the constraints of the Del Mar schedule.  Groups will be held as much as possible during non-academic class periods and they will hope to start in late January.  If you have any further questions please address them to our school psychologists.

Bell Schedule

Our 2022-23 regular bell schedule can be found HERE.

Attendance Instructions

Please keep sick children home and please call the office on the day of your child's absence by 8:00 a.m. (415-435-1468, ext. 4) or email delmar@reedschools.org. This will eliminate the need for a call from the office. We expect students to attend school, unless there is an excused absence-for illness, injury, a medical/dental appointment or a religious holiday. All other absences are marked "unexcused." Unexcused absences do not excuse a student from classroom assignments.
Arriving Late? Leaving Early? Follow these instructions:
Students arriving late to school must sign in with the office and get a tardy slip before going to class. If you need to pick your child up in the middle of the day, please try to do so between classes, and be sure to remind your child to come to the office to meet you there, without needing a call from the office. If they must leave in the middle of a class, please send them with a note to give to that teacher so they can excuse themselves. We do not ever want to call into a classroom unless there is an emergency, so please plan accordingly!
