Counselor Connection 12/4/22
This month Hawks built on their knowledge of positive and negative choices. Sometimes when we make a hurtful choice it can lead to a problem. November’s focus was on how to become problem solving experts and understanding the difference between Small problems and Big problems. K-5 students were introduced to 6 superpowers that they can use when solving a conflict or a challenge.
- Walk away - go someplace else, move away from the person
- Talk it out - Let the person know how you feel and what you need
- Ignore - Don’t react. Don’t let it bother you. No biggie!
- Apologize - Tell them you’re sorry for what you did wrong
- Take Turns - share and let other people use things and have a turn
- Take a break- wait and cool off to solve the problem when you’re less upset
The hope of these lessons was to empower students to realize how they choose to respond to a problem is in their circle of control. We shared examples of Big problems and who safe adults are in our life that we can go to to help us. And if it is a Small problem we can choose a superpower to solve it.

Visitors Must Wear Badges at All Times
Safety is our top priority. Mitigation strategies such as ID badges, clearly identify who is permitted to be on campus. All visitors on campus during school hours must check in at the main office (with a photo ID) and obtain a badge. The badge must be worn at all times and be clearly visible. If you are on campus without a badge you will be asked to report to the main office to obtain one. This applies to all adults, even if you are a regular volunteer on campus. This is a very important safety measure and will be helpful in the event of an emergency. Here is our badge/check-in policy. Please know this will be strictly enforced beginning on November 28, 2022. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.
Sincerely,
Kyle Shaw, Principal

🎁The beloved Neil Cummins Holiday Store tradition returns on Friday, December 9th! This store has been going for over 30 years, let’s keep the tradition burning bright!
Donations of gifts and gift wrapping supplies can be dropped off in the front office until Thursday, December 8. We are in need of treasures for men (luggage, ties, hiking, sports memorabilia, outdoorsy things)! Wrapping supplies are also needed; wrapping paper, gift bags, gift boxes, jewelry boxes, colorful tissue paper, ribbons and tags. We cannot take used clothing or new clothing without tags, dirty or broken items, any children items, toys or stuffed animals. Please donate items that you would like to receive as a gift.
Please send $2 with your child to school on Friday, December 9. Each student will have the opportunity to shop with their class for two gifts - each $1 - for two special adults in their lives. Proceeds will support the Neil Cummins PTO and directly benefit the school, teachers and students. Please note that no child will be turned away from shopping for lack of funds. For those who would prefer to send their money electronically, please feel free to send to Jessica Dinday: PayPal - j7anderson@gmail.com or Venmo - @Jessica-Dinday (last four digits 9232).
After School Sale The Holiday Store will remain open after school that Friday, December 9, from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. for students and the community to shop for more treasures! (Note, gift wrapping will not be available during the after school sale.) All items will be $1.

Lost and Found Don’t forget to stop by outside of the Gym to find your lost items before the holiday break.

Calling all December birthdays! If your child has a December birthday, then look out for a Birthday Book Program flyer from the Library in their backpack this week. By making a donation to this much-loved program, your child will get to choose a brand new book with their name written on a bookplate inside, for all to enjoy at the Neil Cummins Library.
Buying books this Holiday? Then support local and buy from The Book Passage. Mention Neil Cummins at check out (or in the comments field if ordering online) and the school will receive a portion of the purchase in the form of a bookstore gift certificate. We use these to buy more books for the kids to enjoy in our library!
Corte Madera Invitational Art Exhibition Please stop by to see the special display of posters that were created by last year’s Neil Cummins 3rd and 4th graders as part of the Painted Bins art contest held at school last May. The students used art in their posters to express their views on how composting can help save the earth, and the 16 winning posters will be on display 12/3 - 12/15 at the Corte Madera Community Center, 498 Tamalpais Drive. See here for the full list of gallery hours and special opening and closing ceremony events.
Painted Bins is a program that engages young people’s creativity to boost composting in Marin communities. The 16 winning Neil Cummins student posters will be installed on special compost bins as part of a pilot program launching in Corte Madera Town Park in Spring 2023. For more information about the program go to https://paintedbins.org.
