at the Marin County Office of Education

RUSD Community,

Some East Corte Madera residents are asking for their name(s) to be removed from the Territory Transfer Petition. Terena Mares, Deputy Superintendent at the Marin County Office of Education, is responding with the email below. Please note that the County Committee on School District Organization (CCSDO) will hold a meeting on November 7, 2022, at 5:30 PM at the Marin County Office of Education. This is an opportunity to express your opinion about the validity of the petition.

Thank you for your email.  We understand your desire to remove your signature from the petition. We have been in the process of working with legal counsel and the Registrar of Voters to determine the legal basis for removing signatures from the petition once a petition has been filed.  Unfortunately, there is no basis for removing signatures once the petition has been filed. At this point, however, the verification process is not yet complete, consequently the validity of the petition has not been determined.

The East Corte Madera territory transfer petition was received by the Marin County Office of Education on Thursday, October 27, and forwarded to the Registrar of Voters on Friday, October 28th. The Registrar of Voters is currently verifying signatures.  Part of this process includes providing our office with the number of registered voters attributed to the addresses included with the territory transfer petition. The County Superintendent has 30 days from receipt of the petition to complete the signature verification process.

The County Committee on School District (CCSDO) will hold its annual organization meeting on November 7, 2022, 5:30 p.m. at the Marin County Office of Education.  During the meeting, the County Committee will receive a status update on territory transfer petitions in process, including the East Corte Madera petition.

You are welcome to provide public comment during the County Committee meeting.

Terena noted that the County Committee can hear public comments on the validity of the territory transfer petition. I (or Carlos Estrella) will continue to keep you updated as we have additional information.
