Principal's Message

Families,

We have had some fun at Del Mar recently! Last week, our leadership class put on our first Pep Rally. The rally included our own Del Mar musicians playing for the crowd, presentations of the "Dragon of the Trimester" grade-level awards, class competitions and rousing cheers. Many students dressed up in the neon theme for the event. It was a great pep rally for all involved (see pictures below).

On Monday, we celebrated Halloween with a spirited costume contest at lunchtime, and treats for all students during Advisory (thank you parents for donating candy). And yesterday, our staff was celebrated by the PTA with a Dia de los Muertos themed lunch. Thank you to our PTA for recognizing how difficult the job of a middle school staff member is the day of and after Halloween! The lunch refilled our tanks.

Our first trimester is coming to an end this Friday. Our teachers will then take a week to finalize the report cards. Look out for an email from us in mid-November informing you that the report cards are out and viewable on Alma. Our students have worked so hard this first semester. We are very proud of their focus, effort and accomplishments!

Thanks,

Chad Stuart (he/him)

Power of Zero's No-Bully Program

For Adults

Del Mar has partnered with the Power of Zero's No-Bully program to create, develop, and refine our school's responses to, and education about bullying and harassment in our schools. All Staff at Del Mar participated in the No-Bully Foundational Training, and we have also established a No-Bully Leadership Team, as well as a team of Solution Team Coaches to actively address incidents and reports of teasing, bullying, and harassment among our middle schoolers.

As part of our program, Kathy Grey from Power of Zero will facilitate a Parent/Guardian Workshop, How to Bullyproof your Middle Schooler, on Tuesday, November 15th from 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. in the Del Mar Middle School Library (Parent/Guardian Workshop Flyer as PDF).

If you plan to attend, please complete this brief Del Mar No-Bully Parent/Guardian Workshop Registration.

If you have any questions, or would like more information on the program, please do not hesitate to contact Michael Song, Assistant Principal at Del Mar Middle School.

Make-up Picture Day

Make-up Picture Day was today! Please go to THIS WEBSITE and follow the instructions to order.

School Arrival & Departure Times

We want to remind you of our expectations regarding when students should arrive at and leave school. Students may NOT be on campus before 7:45 a.m. unless hours are extended by teacher request or the student is participating in a supervised activity. Students must leave campus immediately after school unless they are involved in a school activity. There is no supervision for students arriving earlier or leaving later during the school day. After arriving at school, students are not permitted to leave campus without first signing out in the office.

Youth Truth Parent Survey

We want to hear from you!!!! Your input is valuable to us. Reed Union School District has partnered with the national nonprofit, YouthTruth, to help us hear feedback from you about what we are doing well, and how we can improve.

From October 31 to November 18, the YouthTruth Family survey will be open and we want to hear from you!

PLEASE TAKE THIS 15 MINUTE ONLINE SURVEY HERE: ytsurvey.org/rusdfamily22

Your response is anonymous and will be combined with responses from other parents/guardians throughout the district. You can complete the survey once per child if you have multiple children in the district, or just once if they have similar experiences. Thank you for your feedback! It is a gift that helps us continually improve.

Youth Truth Student Survey

We are asking your child to participate in the YouthTruth Student Survey on November 17. The YouthTruth Student Survey is a nationally recognized survey used in hundreds of schools and districts across the country, surveying hundreds of thousands of students. The survey asks students about their experiences in the school and with their teachers, including how engaged they are at school, the rigor of their coursework, and their preparedness for the future. Our school, other schools, and researchers may use such information for developing plans to help schools and teachers improve. For information about this survey, please visit http://youthtruthsurvey.org, or speak to a school administrator.

Although we want to hear from all students, participation in this survey is voluntary. If you would like to opt your student out of this survey, please fill out THIS form and return it to the office or email it to Laurie Kristy at lkristy@reedschools.org

Your child’s ratings will not be identified in any reports because results are shared at the group level. Personally identifiable information will not be released to any third party.

Please be aware that under federal law, you have the right to review a copy of the questions asked of your child. If you would like to do so, you can view a copy of the survey in our school office. The survey does ask students about how they feel on campus based on particular sub-groups, including race, gender, social-economic status and more. Some examples of questions asked are:

  • I feel like I will be ready for high school classes when I finish middle school.
  • Adults in my school treat the students with respect.
  • Students at my school respect students from different… religions, sexual orientations, abilities, genders, incomes, races, countries
  • I can usually be myself around other students.
  • When I am feeling upset, stressed, or having problems, there is an adult from school who I can talk to about it.

If you have any questions about the YouthTruth survey, please contact Principal Chad Stuart or Assistant Principal Michael Song.

Nurse's Corner

NURSE’S CORNER – colds and flus and more, oh my!

You may have been hearing through the media about a “tripledemic” or “triple threat”. Of the many viruses circulating at this time, the three most common respiratory viruses are COVID-19, Flu, and RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus). RSV is a common virus that infects the lungs and causes symptoms similar to the common cold. Most people recover in 1 to 2 weeks, but it can be a serious illness for infants and older adults.

Here are some ways to protect you and your children during cold/flu/tripledemic season:

  • Keep children home when sick – return when feeling ready to learn and fever-free for at least 24 hours
  • Wear a mask - they work!  N95 most protective; KN95 more comfortable
  • Wash hands frequently throughout the day (hand sanitizer works, too)
  • Get vaccinated – time for Flu Shot (everyone > 6 months) and COVID-19 Bivalent Booster (available for all 5 years and older).
  • For any illness, seek urgent health care evaluation for your child if
  • Fever is High (> 102° F) and/or not resolving (> 3 days)
  • Child looks or acts very ill or has a behavior change (consider testing for Flu and RSV)
  • Severe cough
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Blood red or purple rash not linked to an injury
Please be sure to report any confirmed cases of Flu, RSV, and COVID-19 to the school attendance line, since Marin public health tracks infectious illnesses in schools.

Thank you for partnering with us to keep our schools healthy and safe!

Attendance Instructions

Please keep sick children home and please call the office on the day of your child's absence by 8:00 a.m. (415-435-1468, ext. 4) or email delmar@reedschools.org. This will eliminate the need for a call from the office. We expect students to attend school, unless there is an excused absence-for illness, injury, a medical/dental appointment or a religious holiday. All other absences are marked "unexcused." Unexcused absences do not excuse a student from classroom assignments.
Arriving Late? Leaving Early? Follow these instructions:
Students arriving late to school must sign in with the office and get a tardy slip before going to class. If you need to pick your child up in the middle of the day, please try to do so between classes, and be sure to remind your child to come to the office to meet you there, without needing a call from the office. If they must leave in the middle of a class, please send them with a note to give to that teacher so they can excuse themselves. We do not ever want to call into a classroom unless there is an emergency, so please plan accordingly!
