Walk & Roll to School

Wednesday, December 7

Dear Reed Families and Caregivers,

It was wonderful seeing so many parents and caregivers at our Halloween parade. The excitement and joy permeated the campus. Thank you also to our parent volunteers for helping with the morning check-in process and for organizing festive classroom celebrations. It was a magical day!

Warmly,

Mary Niesyn & Staff

On Friday, October 28 our Specialists and members of our Instructional Aide team treated Reed Raccoons to a live performance of Shake dem Halloween Bones. It truly was an exciting way to kick off the Halloween weekend!

Parent/Teacher Conference Schedule:

Friday, November 4 is the end of Trimester 1. Parent/teacher conferences will take place Friday,  November 4 - Thursday, November 10. School dismissal time is 12noon. Buses will continue to operate. School lunch is available "to go" for students in grades Kindergarten-2nd. PreK students will have lunch during their school day.

Trimester 1 Report Cards:

Your child's trimester 1 report card will be emailed directly to you the afternoon of Thursday, November 3. It also will be available through Alma. Instructions for accessing Alma and a letter explaining the report card format were emailed to families yesterday. Please check your email.

Youth Truth Survey

Reed Union School District has partnered with the national nonprofit, YouthTruth, to help us hear feedback from you about what we are doing well, and how we can improve.

From October 31 to November 18, the YouthTruth Family survey will be open and we want to hear from you! (This information was also emailed to families)

PLEASE TAKE THIS 15 MINUTE ONLINE SURVEY HERE: ytsurvey.org/rusdfamily22

Your response is anonymous and will be combined with responses from other parents/guardians throughout the district. We ask that one member of each household fill out the survey. If you have more than one child who attends the school district, you may respond to the survey multiple times - one time per child. Thank you for your feedback!

"Music News:  A Note from Ms. Balfe
In music class we have had fun singing "Around the Block and Up The Street." This Halloween song is complete with a fantastic "BOO!" surprise at the end. We turned pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns "just like that" while keeping the beat on rhythm sticks, and guessed our classmates' happy, sad, silly, and mad jack-o-lantern expressions.

Second grade students learned the melody for the chorus of  "Shake Dem Halloween Bones" on xylophones and added shakers that kept the beat. 2nd grade Community Time leaders performed the melody on xylophones while Ms. Lopez's class kept the beat on shakers during last Friday's Shake Dem Bones skit for the school community.

Students have been dancing and "Singing in the Rain" (the silly version), and keeping a beat on various instruments while singing about our "Wet, Wet, Weather." Two canons the students have begun singing are "Round the Oak Tree" and "Now Is The Time For Falling Leaves."

NURSE’S CORNER – colds and flus and more, oh my!

You may have been hearing through the media about a “tripledemic” or “triple threat”. Of the many viruses circulating at this time, the three most common respiratory viruses are COVID-19, Flu, and RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus). RSV is a common virus that infects the lungs and causes symptoms similar to the common cold. Most people recover in 1 to 2 weeks, but it can be a serious illness for infants and older adults.

Here are some ways to protect you and your children during cold/flu/tripledemic season:

  • Keep children home when sick – return when feeling ready to learn and fever-free for at least 24 hours
  • Wear a mask - they work!  N95 most protective; KN95 more comfortable
  • Wash hands frequently throughout the day (hand sanitizer works, too)
  • Get vaccinated – time for Flu Shot (everyone > 6 months) and COVID-19 Bivalent Booster (available for all 5 years and older).

For any illness, seek urgent health care evaluation for your child if

  • Fever is High (> 102 F) and/or not resolving (> 3 days)
  • Child looks or acts very ill or has a behavior change (consider testing for flu / RSV)
  • Severe cough
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Blood red or purple rash not linked to an injury

Please be sure to report any confirmed cases of Flu, RSV, and COVID-19 to the school attendance line, since Marin public health tracks infectious illnesses in schools and requires schools to send exposure notices under some circumstances dictated by Marin public health.

Thank you for partnering with us to keep our schools healthy and safe!

Eyes Up, Marin

Let’s Make our Streets Safer for Everyone!

From mid-October through the end of November, you’ll see bright and colorful banners and lawn signs popping up all over Marin asking people to keep their “Eyes Up” and be alert.  These signs will be asking drivers to slow down, watch when turning and look for pedestrians in the crosswalk, bicyclists to yield to pedestrians and to follow the rules of the road, and those walking to pay attention when crossing the street.

These messages will also show up in your social media feeds, and you can find them at www.streetsmartsmarin.org. Please share with your friends, family and co-workers!

The Eyes Up, Marin Campaign is part of the Street Smarts Program and Safe Routes to Schools, locally funded programs of the Transportation Authority of Marin.
