What a Great Community!

Dear Reed Families and Caregivers,

It has been a busy and engaging few weeks at Reed School and the strong sense of community and community collaboration has extended far beyond our campus. Our pre-K classes are enjoying new playground supplies and equipment thanks to a thoughtful and generous donation from the Tiburon-Belvedere Rotary. Our kindergarten classes learned all about “Community Helpers” on their walking field trip to the Tiburon Fire Department. Our first grade learned all about the life cycle of a mosquito with a visit from teacher Kasey, a representative from the Marin/Sonoma Mosquito and Vector Control District. Our second grade student leaders continue to guide our entire school community at our weekly Community Time assemblies. Lastly, our Del Mar student leadership collaboration began today. These amazing middle school leaders supported students across the entire campus. Del Mar leaders worked with students in classrooms, at recess, at snacktime, and in specialist classes. As always, we are so grateful to experience the collaboration and support of such a dedicated community!

Warmly,

Mary Niesyn & Staff

HALLOWEEN FUN AT REED • UPDATED WITH VISITOR CHECK IN PROCEDURES

With Halloween just around the corner, we wanted to make sure that you all have the most up-to-date information regarding Halloween festivities at Reed on Monday, October 31.  We have contingencies in place rain or shine!

* NEW INFORMATION • VISITOR CHECK IN FOR HALLOWEEN:

  • All guests must wear a personalized visitor badge to visit the campus.
  • The badges will be pre-printed and available on tables in the front circle beginning at 8:00am.
  • Find the table that corresponds with your last name to collect your badge.
  • Gates will open for guests at 8:35am. Guests are asked to form a large outer-circle on the blacktop. Look for cones with teacher names.

Gentle Reminders:

  • Guests may not be on campus without a personalized name badge.
  • If you don’t see your name tag, please come to the front office.

General Guidelines:

  • Costumes are optional.
  • Students wear costumes to school.  Please be sure to select an appropriately themed costume for your child. Costumes may not include weapons, masks, or be overtly scary (this includes parents). Be mindful that our students are young and scary images can be overwhelming.
  • After the parade, students will change into their regular clothing. Costumes will be placed into backpacks.
  • Classroom parties have been scheduled at the discretion of the classroom teacher. All guests must sign in at the office before proceeding to the classrooms.

School Wide Parade — No Rain:

  • Our school-wide parade is scheduled for Monday, October 31 from  8:45am to 9:15ish on the blacktop.
  • Parents, caregivers, and non school-age siblings are welcome. Parents must wait on the blacktop before the parade. Please do not escort your child to his/her classroom either before or after the parade.
  • Teachers will bring students down to the blacktop to form a large circle.  Parents and guests form an outer circle.  This will allow for equal opportunity picture taking!
  • Parents may not stand in the center of the circle or in front of the sound system, as this is reserved for students only.

School Wide Parade — In the Event of Rain:

  • Parade will be relocated to the MPR. Due to limited space and fire code restrictions, the parade will be a student-only event. Unfortunately, parents are not invited to attend.
  • Classroom parties will continue as scheduled.

Library News:  A Note from Mrs. Smith

Just over 2,500 books have been checked out this school year and the students are enjoying the new library furniture! Students spent their first visits getting to know the library shelves and procedures, as well as reviewing how to treat books and proper book care.  We continue to encourage responsibility and are aiming to get more books turned in on time this fall!

All grades heard numerous stories that were part of our LatinX Hispanic Heritage study.

Second grade did an illustrator study of Rafael Lopez, whose titles we enjoyed feature beautiful work with stories that tie into our equity and inclusion curriculum. They worked with partners as they created identity Venn diagrams. First grade made identity shoes, after hearing various stories that highlight grit and empathy. We discussed being able to put ourselves in someone else's shoes, particularly when reading or hearing a story. Kindergarten featured stories that highlighted creativity, determination and taking care of each other and our books, including some that inspired many Towntastic creations.

PreK is thrilled to be coming into the library space and we will continue to practice how to use a library as a whole class in the next months since it is a different experience than visiting one with caregivers and friends.

We will continue focusing on characters and their identities as we move into our fall-themed read alouds, highlighting Diwali, Halloween, Dia de los Muertos, and Native American Heritage Month which begins in November.  The students will get more chances to be creative in the space and focus on gratitude. Speaking of, I'm grateful for the parent volunteers who have been so gracious with their time and helping shelve books and tidy up the space.  Happy reading!

Picture Make-Up Day

For students who missed picture day, the make-up day is November 2.  Please email Isabelle if you would like your student to have a picture taken that day.

Lunch Activities Parent Volunteers Needed

We are looking for volunteers to work with Mr. Kaiser and Irina Boguk to coordinate lunchtime recess activities for our kiddos.

We have a lot of lunchtime activities to choose from. We will be starting with chalk art, Twister and long jump rope turning. It is important that you read the Lunch Activities Parent Volunteer Policy, which is attached to the SignUp Genius link. Descriptions of the activities are also in the document so please read!

For consistency and continuity, we are ideally seeking parent volunteers that can commit to a regular schedule. We would like a commitment of at least a few Fridays if possible. Thank you!
