Dear Reed Families and Caregivers,

It was wonderful seeing so many of you at our 2022 Reed School Towntastic community gathering. What fun it was to walk through our “cardboard town” and listen to students describe and share their creations! Looking ahead to more Reed School fun, be sure to mark your calendar and read below for details about our upcoming Halloween parade. Lastly, our Kimochis tool of the month for October is “There is a time to be silly and a time to be serious.” Below you will find a variety of stories that students will hear throughout the month reinforcing this important skill.

Warmly,

Mary Niesyn & Staff

Halloween Fun at Reed

With Halloween just around the corner, we wanted to make sure that you all have the most up-to-date information regarding Halloween festivities at Reed.  We have contingencies in place rain or shine!

General Guidelines:

  • Costumes are optional
  • Students wear costumes to school.  Please be sure to select an appropriately themed costume for your child. Costumes may not include weapons, masks, or be overtly scary (this includes parents). Be mindful that our students are young and scary images can be overwhelming.
  • After the parade, students will change into their regular clothing. Costumes will be placed into backpacks.
  • Classroom parties have been scheduled at the discretion of the classroom teacher. All guests must sign in at the office before proceeding to the classrooms.

School Wide Parade — No Rain:

  • Our school-wide parade is scheduled for Monday, October 31st from  8:45am to 9:15ish on the blacktop.
  • Parents, caregivers, and non school-age siblings are welcome. Parents must wait on the blacktop before the parade. Please do not escort your child to his/her classroom either before or after the parade.
  • Teachers will bring students down to the blacktop to form a large circle.  Parents and guests form an outer circle.  This will allow for equal opportunity picture taking!
  • Parents may not stand in the center of the circle or in front of the sound system, as this is reserved for students only.

School Wide Parade — In the Event of Rain:

  • Parade will be relocated to the MPR. Due to limited space and fire code restrictions, the parade will be a student-only event. Unfortunately, parents are not invited to attend.
  • Classroom parties will continue as scheduled.

PE News:  A note from Mr. Kaiser

Physical Education class is off to a great start!  We’ve been busy this year especially since adding PreK to the program. Students in PreK are learning about personal space and working on individual skill development. We have been practicing walking in a line, balancing on a beam, hop scotch, warm up exercises, throwing and catching with a kooshball, scarf juggling, hula hoops, dancing, and playing keepy uppy with a balloon.

Kindergarten through 2nd grade have learned 17 different warm-up exercises and are learning how to be warm-up leaders!  When you get a chance, ask your student to show you some of our warm-up exercises.

We had a great time with the large parachute, learning how to be good listeners and great team players. It was a little wild when we added 1,000 ping pong balls and had our students shake it as hard as they could!  We learned that "many hands make light work" when everyone pitches in to clean up. And it got a little scary when we played Shark Attack.

Every Fall the focus of our units is the underhand roll and toss. We start with a school favorite Team Pinguard, followed by Cornhole. We finish off the time between Thanksgiving and winter vacation with my favorite, the Bowling unit. We will be needing some volunteers for that unit, so reach out to me if you have any interest in helping with bowling.

Speaking of volunteers, we are looking for a couple of committed parents or caregivers (5-6 weeks in a row Mondays and/or Fridays) to lead some lunchtime activities. These volunteers would come in at noon, get the equipment ready, and train other parent volunteers. Please email me at ekaiser@reedschools.org if you are interested in this volunteer role.

Picture Make-Up Day

For students who missed picture day, the make-up day is November 2.  Please email Isabelle if you would like your student to have a picture taken that day.

WALK AND ROLL

International Walk and Roll to School day is Wednesday, October 12! “Fall” into a good habit, help decrease traffic, and do something positive for the environment by walking, biking, scooting, or taking the bus to school. All participants will earn a prize, and you can also enter the very cool raffle, so get those sneakers on and we’ll see you on October 12!

BUDDY UP is a new contest to get students to walk (park and walk), bike, carpool or ride the bus together. Now through October 31, sign up your group of two or more students from neighboring families to travel to or from school.  Tell us your success story!

Habits are more likely to stick when families support each other. There’s safety in numbers and groups are more easily seen by drivers. Best of all, friendships and fun memories are formed! There will be a $50 award for 5 winning groups. Notifications will be sent out in early November!

Support the PTA

Do this now! Support the PTA by contributing your annual dues (minimum ask is $30 per child, but any amount is welcome)

Your dues support your child’s enrichment programs such as field trips, school assemblies, community events (like our recent Towntastic), and staff appreciation. If you’re interested in volunteering your time, please keep an eye out for opportunities posted in the Reed Newsletter or contact the Reed PTA membership team: elizabeth.cha@gmail.com
