Principal's Message

Families,

It’s October!!! One of my favorite months in terms of weather in the Bay Area! With that, we have reached the middle of our first trimester. Information is provided below about accessing your child's mid-trimester progress. This is a good time to remember that academic education is about learning, and that our goal with assessments is to measure your child’s learning and growth that has occurred thus far.

Our teachers have been facilitating the learning process with engaging lessons, activities and projects. As an example,  HERE is a video made for Mr. O'Brien and Mr. Stoll’s 8th grade science students where they demonstrate density’s effect on buoyancy through scuba diving. Other examples can be seen in the new episode of our Del Mar Library series, where Mr. Sonneville features exciting projects in our science and art classes, sharing books in our collection that will help students explore these concepts in greater detail. You can watch the episode on Youtube or Drive, and encourage your child to drop by the Del Mar library!

Thanks,

Chad Stuart (he/him)

Principal

Visit From The Portuguese President

Our leadership class had a very rich experience last week just across the street. The students met the President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who came to Tiburon in honor of the Portuguese Dairy Mural Wall Project. The

President was joined by his Secretary of State and Ambassador, among others. We also had members of the Tiburon Town Council in attendance, our town mayor and representatives from the Marin Board of Supervisors.  HERE is an article in the Marin Independent Journal about the event.

The project honors the history, culture and contributions of Azorean Portuguese immigrants to the Tiburon Peninsula. The mural project will depict what was formerly known as the Little Reed Dairy, now the site where our school sits. Our students learned about our area's rich connection with Portugal and were able to see real-life connections between two cultures.

Last week, two Tiburon town historians also presented to the class, so they learned the history of the connection between Tiburon and Portugal prior to the event.

If you would like to watch the speeches from the event, you can view them HERE.

The President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, reads a note from Amelie Dunn, whose grandfather, James Dunn, was awarded the rank of Grand Officer of the Ordem do Infante Dom Henrique (Order of Prince Henry) by the President of Portugal in 2002 - the award was for his advocacy and humanitarian services to the people of East Timor.

Mid-Trimester Progress

We have approached the midpoint of our first trimester for the school year. In lieu of progress reports, our teaching staff have updated their gradebooks and provided specific feedback with regards to each student's habits of learning. Please review this short video on how to access and review your student's progress in ALMA. Should you need help accessing ALMA, please visit this site: https://help.reedschools.org/

8th Grade Challenge Day

We are very excited that our 8th grade students get the opportunity to participate on October 10th or 11th in Challenge Day, a nationally recognized program that Del Mar 8th graders have been participating in annually for many years. Challenge Day is a powerful way for students to connect with their fellow classmates in their final year together in the Reed Union School District.

Challenge Day is designed to help students build empathy and compassion within their community. It helps address common issues often seen at middle school, such as cliques, gossip, rumors, teasing, isolation, stereotypes, harassment, sexism, homophobia, and racism. Our goal at Del Mar is to ensure every student feels welcome and included - Challenge Day helps towards that goal.

8th grade is the perfect time for students to participate in such an event. It is age appropriate and focuses on what many students are experiencing and thinking about as they become a young adult.

Parents and students are given the opportunity to opt-out of Challenge Day, and participate in regular classes, if they so choose.

Picture Day

Picture Day was on Friday! Hopefully you saw your student’s ID card which was sent home with them on Friday. If you would like to order professional shots from the photographer, please go to THIS WEBSITE and follow the instructions to order.

Make-up Picture Day is November 2nd in case your student missed the original date.

Lost & Found

Our Lost & Found is overflowing and we will need to donate items soon. Please remind your student to take a look to discover if they’ve left something at school. You can access the Lost and Found after school hours; it is under the lunch overhang outside of the gym.

Message from CDPH about Rainbow Fentanyl

We continue to receive information from local law enforcement about a very dangerous drug situation in Marin County. The misuse and abuse of opioids, or any prescription medication, is already cause for concern, but there has been a rise in the prevalence of counterfeit Percocet and Oxycodone/oxycontin in Marin County as well as new forms of Fentanyl. Please read THIS from the Marin County Office of Education and the California Department of Public Health Department for this important information.

Join the Discussion: Current Drug Trends among Local Youth This Thursday

Let'sTalk Marin is hosting a discussion on Thursday, 10/6, at 7:00pm about today's current drug trends among local youth. HERE is a flier about the event.

Traffic Safety

When dropping off and picking up your child from school, please remember that safety of the children is our number one concern. We recognize people are often in a hurry, but that can create a very dangerous situation for the students when crossing streets. Please also recognize that double-parking in front of the school can create blind spots for other drivers, while students are crossing the streets. Another area of concern is turning the corner from Avenida Miraflores to Tiburon Blvd. There are many students trying to cross the street there after school. Please keep your eyes up and make sure no student is trying to cross the street before you make the turn.

PLEASE slow down, keep your eyes up and obey all traffic safety rules around our school. Thank you for understanding!

Bell Schedule

Our 2022-23 regular bell schedule can be found HERE.

Attendance Instructions

Please keep sick children home and please call the office on the day of your child's absence by 8:00 a.m. (415-435-1468, ext. 4) or email delmar@reedschools.org. This will eliminate the need for a call from the office. We expect students to attend school, unless there is an excused absence-for illness, injury, a medical/dental appointment or a religious holiday. All other absences are marked "unexcused." Unexcused absences do not excuse a student from classroom assignments.

Students arriving late to school must sign in with the office and get a tardy slip before going to class. If you need to pick your child up in the middle of the day, please try to do so between classes, and be sure to remind your child to come to the office to meet you there, without needing a call from the office. If they must leave in the middle of a class, please send them with a note to give to that teacher so they can excuse themselves. We do not ever want to call into a classroom unless there is an emergency, so please plan accordingly!
