Counselor Connection
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is a critical part of our curriculum at Neil Cummins. We are firm believers that a strong social-emotional foundation is necessary for school success, academic achievement, positive social relationships, and the development of emotional competence. Success and challenges will unquestionably happen at school, but my role as the school counselor is to help your children learn how to self-regulate, build resiliency, and ultimately appropriately solve problems as they arise. Each class has been receiving classroom guidance lessons on a myriad of topics such as: self-regulation, communication skills, problem-solving skills, conflict-resolution skills, positive choice-making skills, self-esteem and diversity. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
This past month Hawks in Kindergarten, first, second, and third grade have been exploring the topic of inclusivity. Classrooms had thoughtful discourse on individual “superpowers” about what makes them special and unique. And, instead of fearing differences we can shed light on those qualities to make a positive, inclusive community for learning.
Students in fourth and fifth grade learned about the Brain State Model that focuses on three areas of the brain including the brain stem, limbic system, and prefrontal lobe. We explored this framework to help us understand how our brain can impact aspects of our behavior. With awareness around different states of the brain we are able to have more awareness to manage our own thoughts and emotions.
In addition, your child will be building and bolstering their toolbox. Each month they will learn a new tool. This month we learned about our Breathing Tool. We explored and discussed how we can use deep-breathing techniques to help calm our bodies and our brains when we are upset so that we can problem solve effectively.
