Staff Development Day (NO SCHOOL)

Monday, October 17

Dear Reed Parents & Caregivers,

It was wonderful to see so many of our Reed families and caregivers last Thursday evening at our Back to School Night. A strong sense of community, enthusiasm, and joy permeated the entire campus. An additional shout out to our generous PTA for sponsoring a staff Back-to-School dinner before the evening began. What a treat! May I also extend our Reed School gratitude to our Reed & Bel Aire music teachers, Ms. Carolyn Balfe and Mr. Jeb Gist, and to the student members of the Reed 2nd Grade Chorus and the Bel Aire chorus for their wonderful performance at the grand opening of the Belvedere Tiburon Library. Lastly, a shout out to the many parents who stepped in at the last minute to provide playground coverage on Tuesday morning before school so we could take an all-staff photo for picture day. It truly takes a village. We look forward to seeing everyone again at Reed Towntastic on September 29.

Music News:  A note from Ms. Balfe

In music class we have been singing songs and playing music games in which  students practice keeping a steady beat in creative ways, being a friendly partner, taking turns, being whole body listeners, and solo singing. Songs you may have heard your Reed Raccoon singing around the house include: "Peace Like A River", "This Land Is Your Land", "Make New Friends", and of course the "Reed School Song".

Is your 2nd grader interested in joining the chorus? The next session of chorus will begin shortly and all 2nd graders are welcome to join this voluntary, once a week, 'opt in' lunch recess club. I will make an announcement here at school, and curious newcomers are encouraged to attend the first week of a new chorus session just to try it out!

Sharing Time In Music Class: If your child would like to share a piece of music that they have been working on at home, please know that they are welcome to bring their music and/or instrument to school on their class's music day to share with us all! An email in advance is helpful for coordinating this (cbalfe@reedschools.org)!

TOWNTASTIC

Get ready to join us at Reed Elementary on September 29 from 5:00 – 7:00pm for food, music, and fun alongside a cardboard town created by Reed Students! To participate in the event, children should create and decorate a "box" at home that will be brought to the event and become part of our Reed TOWNTASTIC town. The box can be turned into anything in our town: a building, bus, boat, park, etc. TOWNTASTIC  is a fun, family friendly community-building event and all families, caretakers, and siblings are welcome.  There will be food and beverages available for purchase. Please contact or Argavan Nilforoush (argavan@gmail.com) or Michelle Thomsen at (mmsmith8@yahoo.com) if you have any questions.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Parent Volunteers Needed!!  In order to make the event run smoothly, we need your help. Please consider signing up for a slot and encouraging friends to sign up with you.

WALK AND ROLL

International Walk and Roll to School day is Wednesday, October 12! “Fall” into a good habit, help decrease traffic, and do something positive for the environment by walking, biking, scooting, or taking the bus to school. All participants will earn a prize, and you can also enter the very cool raffle, so get those sneakers on and we’ll see you on October 12!

BUDDY UP is a new contest to get students to walk (park and walk), bike, carpool or ride the bus together. Now through October 31, sign up your group of two or more students from neighboring families to travel to or from school.  Tell us your success story!

Habits are more likely to stick when families support each other. There’s safety in numbers and groups are more easily seen by drivers. Best of all, friendships and fun memories are formed! There will be a $50 award for 5 winning groups. Notifications will be sent out in early November!

LOST AND FOUND

The mornings are cool while the afternoons have been sunny and warm, so many sweatshirts and jackets have been left behind on the playground. These items are collected each day and hung on the Lost & Found rack by the school entrance gate. If you are missing a favorite jacket, sweatshirt, or water bottle please be sure to stop by and look for these items before the end of the month when they will be donated on October 3rd.

Lost & Found Tips:

  • Well labeled items are most easily returned to their owners.
  • Laundry proof stickers with a name and phone number are the best. Try Mabel's Labels.
  • Sharpies tend to bleed and become difficult to read over time. Labels are best!
  • Make sure the label is placed where it can be seen clearly (easier to see if they are up near the top of the garment/neck area).

We try our hardest to reunite kiddos with their lost items so If you are missing anything please check the lost and found today or contact Shannon Kaiser (shannon.b.kaiser@gmail.com) and she will keep an eye out for it.

Join the Reed PTA! Your contribution helps to make field trips, assemblies, Sing-a-Story, Townstastic, end of year events, and much more possible! Please note that volunteer hours are not required (unless you want to of course!). Contribute today by clicking on the link below and help bring these wonderful events and activities to Reed!

The next PTA meeting will be on Wednesday, October 12 in Room 0. Come at 8:45am to chat and the meeting will start at 9:00am.
