Dear Bel Aire Families,

It's been toasty at Bel Aire the last few days, but students and teachers have been cool as cucumbers. We're settling into routines for learning and having fun at the same time.

Reminder to please put sunscreen on your little ones and send them to school with hats and water bottles (and write their names on both). We have water bottle filling stations around campus.

Last week we had our New Student pizza lunch in the library. We had a great turnout, and our new Bel Aire friends had a chance to meet and talk to our Specialist teachers. Dr. McGrath even stopped by!

Also last week, we had our first school fire drill on Friday afternoon, and students did a great job despite the blazing sun and loud alarm. Bel Aire teachers were prepared with class rosters and emergency backpacks, and the office staff was quick and efficient with taking roll. We'll have safety drills throughout the year, including monthly fire drills. My goal is for us to be able to automatically respond to any emergencies--like muscle memory.

We'll have our Student Council Board elections next week, and classroom reps will follow. Bel Aire Student Council will be better than ever this year--these kids know how to get things done! Thank you Mrs. Brigulio and Mr. Gist for your leadership.

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT is tomorrow from 5:30-7:00 on the lower blacktop. We'll begin with some remarks and then send you off to classrooms. I'm excited to welcome you all to campus and for you to see your child's classroom. Bel Aire BTSN is a parent and caregiver event, thank you.

BEL AIRE MATH CLUB IS BACK!

Bel Aire offers a weekly math club for highly motivated math students who want an enrichment opportunity. The club is run by Dr. Allan Gold with the assistance of a few helpers. The club is held on Tuesday mornings, 7:30-7:55am, beginning September 20th, in the C Building classrooms.

The program provides a variety of math questions requiring logical reasoning and problem solving strategies. Students work together and should be fast and independent learners. The adults guide and direct students, as needed. Students have the opportunity to participate in contests they are prepared to solve based on their weekly problems.

If your child is interested in joining the club, please email Dr. Gold at agold@reedschools.org ASAP, so he will know whom to expect.  This year parent volunteers are allowed to be on campus, so he both needs and would greatly appreciate two parents to assist for each grade.  If you are interested. please contact Dr. Gold and he will let you know what he needs (basically helping students with problem solving - all answers are supplied).

Thanks so much for your interest!  We look forward to a year of fun math challenge!

MAP Testing: Bel Aire students recently participated in NWEA MAP assessments. These formative assessments are designed to help the teachers gain more understanding of their students to target instruction and support in the specific areas of math and reading. Students will take the assessment again in the winter and spring to help measure growth. The results are one data point we use throughout the year, along with class assignments, CAASPP scores, report card, and student input.
