Dear RUSD Community,

Welcome back to the 2022-23 school year! Great news! An RUSD family, who would like to remain anonymous, has generously offered to provide pizza this Friday for every single student in the district. This  family read the news that we would be unable to offer free lunch this week and made a significant donation to the Foundation for Reed Schools to cover the cost of lunch for all 1025 students. We are so grateful to this family!  RUSD has a 40-year history of parents stepping up when needed. Thank you to this family and to the Foundation for this kindness and generosity!

  • Welcome Back - Nothing like student-made welcome back signs to make everyone feel welcome!

  • Breakfast & Lunch Update - Our new vendor, the LunchMaster, is scheduled to return to service on Tuesday, September 6th. September menus are not yet posted by The LunchMaster. Check here for more detailed information.
  • Another Big Congratulations to Del Mar Middle School - At Back to School Night, the Program Director for the National Schools to Watch program will present the well-earned flag to the staff. Congratulations!
  • COVID Clarity - Best website link: https://coronavirus.marinhhs.org/schools
  • School Board Election - We will have 4 candidates running for 3 RUSD School Board seats. Thank you! I also encourage everyone to take the time to make an informed decision.
  • PreK - We’ve added a whole new grade level! These little dolls are making friends, learning routines, and entering each morning with developing confidence.

  • Monthly Superintendent Chat on Zoom - Please join me tomorrow, September 1st at 11:30 AM on this Zoom link for our monthly Superintendent Chat.
  • Consistent Newsletters - After receiving great input from the Communication Committee, we’ve utilized Actionaly to create a consistent newsletter format. Enjoy!
  • Town Library - Join the Belvedere Tiburon Library for the Grand Opening celebration on Saturday, September 17, from 10:30 AM – 2:00 PM.

If you are interested in more detailed information, please see below:

Universal Breakfast & Lunch
- The LunchMaster notified us last Tuesday that lunch service would not be available for 7 days. Service is scheduled to restart on Tuesday, September 6th. Here are the key points to keep in mind:

  • This change is due to a new state mandate.
  • Breakfast and lunch are free for everyone.
  • It is still important to complete the "Free & Reduced" Lunch Application if you feel you may qualify.
  • The new vendor is The LunchMaster.
  • The meals will be similar to Choice Lunch, but you do not have to place an order.
  • The LunchMaster gives school districts the option of placing orders or not. At this time, RUSD has selected not to ask families to place an order in an effort to simplify the process for families. We will monitor usage and adjust accordingly. This is a different process than what you will find in other districts.
  • Any perishable breakfast or lunch food items that are not eaten throughout the week will be donated.
  • The monthly menu will usually be published the week before the month begins so that families can look at the options and decide if they would like to pack a lunch or ask for the LunchMaster meal. The LunchMaster has not posted the menu for the upcoming month yet.
  • The food will follow federal nutrition guidelines.

Breakfast times are as follows:

  • Reed Elementary at 8:05 AM
  • Bel Aire at 7:30 AM
  • DelMar at 8:00 AM

COVID Clarity

  • Students and staff must stay home when experiencing COVID symptoms.
  • People who test positive must stay home and isolate for at least 5 days, and may return to school as soon as Day 6 with a negative test and use of a mask. If unable to test, stay isolated for 10 days. People may return on Day 11 even if the test is still positive, as long as the person is free from fever for more than 24 hours and has resolving symptoms.

PreK - We’ve added a whole new grade level! Big thanks to Dr. Mary Niesyn and the entire Reed team for the extraordinary effort. We are so happy to have you part of RUSD!

School Board Election
- In the November election, you will be voting on RUSD’s school board members. The terms for AJ Brady, Afsaneh Zolfaghari, and Sherry Wangenheim have expired. AJ Brady has decided to not run again. We will really miss his institutional knowledge and informed perspective. We are so thankful for his many years of service to all of the students of RUSD! Four community members filed papers to run for the school board: Afsaneh Zolfaghari, Sherry Wangenheim, Shelby Pasarell Tsai, and Sarah Buck-Gerber.

Belvedere Tiburon Library - Join the Belvedere Tiburon Library for the Grand Opening celebration on Saturday, September 17, from 10:30 AM – 2:00 PM. The celebration will begin with a ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by family-friendly activities, including a scavenger hunt, a magic show, a photo booth, and more! Be sure to come and check out the new Teen Room and tinker in the Makerspace. Three of our RUSD students will join the ribbon cutting ceremony!

Excessive Heat Watch - Marin County has received an Excessive Heat Watch warning from the National Weather Service (NWS) for this upcoming holiday weekend.  NWS issues alerts to ensure community members are prepared and ready to take action. Staff and clients should visit https://www.marinhhs.org/staying-cool-safe-warm-weather.  Vulnerable residents should:

  • Plan ahead
  • Prepare for power outages
  • Have a buddy system: During a heat wave, check on medically vulnerable family members, friends, neighbors, and co-workers
  • Stay hydrated
  • If possible, go to a cool place like a mall or library for relief from the heat

No need to Fill Out the Primary Health Form - Primary.Health had a transfer of ownership over the summer. While the platform stayed the same, this transfer necessitated users to re-submit consent forms. If you received an email from Primary Health, there is no need to fill out the form as we are not participating in pool testing this school year.

Best regards,

Dr. Kimberly McGrath

Superintendent
Reed Union School District
"We are even stronger together!"

At the RUSD Board Meeting on 8/16, the following topics were reviewed:

Superintendent Update - Dr. McGrath updated the board on multiple topics including the state mandated free meals program,  a new school visitor SchoolPass system, COVID school guidance, universal pre-K, and administrative goals for the year.  She also introduced a special education programs and consultants audit that will occur over the next few months.

Trustee Updates - Trustees reported out on their activities over the summer months including their attendance at a board workshop on policy on August 8th, Marin County School Board Association seminars, and back to school kickoff festivities.  All trustees mentioned their appreciation for work done over the summer and expressed a heartfelt welcome back to school to our entire community.

Playground Equipment- - Due to the need of age appropriate equipment for the universal pre-k students and outdated playground equipment, Reed School will be replacing both their structures later this fall.  The funding was earmarked for student population growth and specific pre-k needs, so there is no impact to the operational budget.  Bel Aire's equipment is also in need of replacement, but there is retaining wall work that needs to be completed before the replacement can be made.

RUSD ESY - Ms. Melissa Daymond, Teacher at Reed School, gave an overview of the Extended School Year program offered at Bel Aire this summer.

The next board meeting is scheduled for September 13, 2022.
